dave635,

Thank you for a thought-provoking post!

All of your first list are items that were standard equipment on RHD/GB M5's to help justify the arrogant price (about 50% uplift on an M535i). See earlier post in this thread.

There were only three GB cars including yours with Silver leather 0233.

I have option 077 listed as 'Special Leather'. The other two cars with Silver leather are recorded as having option 086 'Full Leather Pack'.

Option 077 was listed on one other car only.

Your car is recorded as 'Special Paint' (the underbonnet paint colour sticker should read 'Sonderlackierung').

My research so far suggests that the current BMW description for option 078 (Turkis hood) is these days something to do with a turquoise-coloured convertible top, perhaps from the Individual range (this is pure speculation). Option codes do change.

Including your car, there were 6 GB cars with option code 078. My current state of knowledge suggested that this is a code for Green/black metallic paint - which doesn't sound anything like 'silvery/blueish' - the latter would suggest Cirrus blue (see images of my own car) or perhaps Cosmos. Both of those colours were standard production shades and would not qualify for the description 'Special Paint'.

I have some photos of a couple of cars with option code 078 and these are definitely a dark green colour.

According to the details I have, your car should also be fitted with option 459, memory for drivers' seat. The control is located on the centre console just in front of the seat movement switches. I suspect this option may account for the reference 940....or on second thoughts, perhaps not!

It sounds like I need to do some more work on this....can you post images?

Many thanks

Mfiver

jimmy01,

The details I have on your car suggest it is to 'standard' GB M5 specification, i.e. no cost options (metallic paint was a no-cost option).

There were only two GB M5's in this colour - the other was #030, which had Pacific blue leather, Satin Black Chrome and the M-Technic aerodynamic styling kit.

As they are adjacent builds, my (wild) guess is that both cars were ordered for BMW GB/dealer stock.

Can you make it to Bracknell this Saturday? E28 M5 21st Anniversary event....

PM me if so.

Kind regards

Mfiver

Mfiver,
as much as I would love to get down, my M5 is not in drivable condition at the moment and probably wont be for a while as I have a few other projects on the go at the moment, thanks for the info on the car it all makes good reading even if your car is only "Basic" model 8-) to all the purists sorry but my car has the later 3.6 fitted because when I got my car it was a "Barn find" so to speak with no front end and 4 years of rat/mice infestation (under bonnet only thank god!) so was missing most of the loom and any rubber fitments and after a long search was decided the easier option was to fit an e34 engine, either that or use car for parts and I couldent do that, so hopefully when its done it will still look std but be slightly faster and also have pacific leather, please not too much flameing!.

Mfiver,

you are correct about the memory seat function, i was just lazy & copied the description for option 458 from your earlier post !

The underbonnet paint sticker does indeed read Sonderlackierung, its maybe my poor description of the colour thats to blame here.

The info above re options 077 & 078 came from the build printout i got from my local dealer a couple of months back, as you say the codes may have meant something else 20 years ago. I will have alook under the rear seat as suggested above & see if there is anything lurking there.

Currently have the car up in the air while i overhaul brakes & suspension mounts/bushes so unable to make it to this weekends do unfortunately. Then have the timing chain to do ! Will take some photos soon though.

Cheers,

Dave.

Jimmy,

Flaming? Not from here! I take my hat off to you for bringing a car back from (almost-but-obviously-not-quite) dead. Bet it goes rather well with another 30bhp and a bit more torque.....

Pacific leather? Why not! I will happily take any surplus Pacific blue cloth bits you might decide to liberate....let me know.

Whilst I am an originality junkie - up to a point - I would nevertheless like to find a pair of electric sports seats for mine, I have most of the sports seat trim items (from an M5 was converted from blue cloth to black leather) and two sets of seat foams so am looking for seats of any colour/trim, really.

Just a pipe dream....

Regards

Dave,

We will look forward to seeing the car, then! Please do post some images when you can, it would be good to get a look at the colour. It's certainly an unusual spec - this is what I like about M5's.

I admit that I haven't really checked out the claim that no two were the same (I don't think that's quite the case) but it's not far off.

Look at the only two Arctic cars described above - same colour but one with cloth, one leather; one the absolute Q-car with all the brightwork and the other all 80's menace with the M-Technic aero kit and dechroming.

The car will feel a lot better with all the bushes done....when you get your chain done, it would be very interesting to see images of the displaced parts, especially the nylon guide rails.

Regards
