We are interested in all E28 M5's but is just so happens that we have always purchased the older ones no particular reason.

The information though was for my own database that I have been creating. So far over the last few years I have been able to prove the existence of at least 51 RHD cars still in existence with another 5 that I have not been able to trace chassis numbers etc.

If you want to send me your email address I will send it over you may be able to fill in a few gaps for me.


NB Although in many cases I do have owners details and phone numbers I never forward this info just details of the cars.

I couldn't find a "spotted" thread, so hoped a little off topic revival of this one wouldn't hurt...

Spotted D391 YSS today at BMW Battersea when I popped in for parts. Is it still yours Jez? Is it in for anything serious?

A quick google brought up this thread and the posts from late 2011.

Really liked the look of the extended leather!

Well Spotted Gruber

Hi Gruber I am impressed - what did you think of the old girl.

I was going to do a slow restoration of the car myself - already done the leather so glad you liked it - but I am spending more and more time abroad with my business now and decided that I either needed to sell the car to someone who I knew would restore it or I had to get someone to do it all for me. I spoke to the BMW Batersea guys at NEC last November and they were so keen and eager to do the car that I have sent it to them. They are in the process of inspecting and costing out everything for me and then we are looking to start the work probably July time depending on their workload. I have verbally agreed a timescale with them of up to 2 years so that we can do everything she requires.

Engine - Fit timing chain and possibly also rebuild depending on what Inspection finds.

Body - New wings, sunroof (metal) + panels as required then full respray.

Then depending on cost I have asked for them to look at replacing / renew braking system, cooling system, change exhaust to stainless etc...

Ultimately goal is to return her to the specification as she left the factory so that will be no M tech bodykit just the rear boot spoiler.

I have asked them to do a full photographic report on each stage as in between trips I was going to record the rebuild on the forum if other members thought it would be of interest, what do you think?

Blimey! That's quite a project!!

Hats off to you for biting the bullet - you'll have a magnificent car once it's finished. I'd be interested to know their labour rates - do they offer any sort of discount for major projects on the older models?

It looked pretty good "as is" but I spotted the rust to the top of the nearside wing and wondered if it was in for panel work.

Keep us up to speed with it!

And I don't live far from there, so I'd be happy to pop in and check on progress while you're overseas

Hi Gruber would be great if you could pop in occasionally and update me my email is jeremy.woodcock@hotmail.co.uk. I have asked them for a quarterly update with some pictures and they seem happy to do this.

Price - I have still to agree with them the cost because a) it depends on what the inspection report turns up and b) depends on how far I want to go with the replace / renew theme. They did say as a member of BMW Car Club I automatically get a discount but also they did say that if they were given the complete restoration job that they would also do me a discounted rate. The final clincher was that they said any parts that are no longer available off the shelf they will be able to source or manufacture direct from BMW.

I think some people might not understand the restoration when the car does not look too bad but I think like any car of this age once you start to look under the skin more and more jobs appear so ultimately this might turn out cheaper than doing one job at a time and never really ending up with the car 'finished'.

Hi all. After 23 years of patience (long story), I was finally given the opportunity to own #009. It travelled from NJ to the Philippines in 2007 and now in Oct 2013 it's finally mine.

Build date 11/1986
Production Code DC93

I'll check for the build sheet if it's still there and post it on here.
The beautiful thing about this car is I know its history from 1988!

The Polaris silver Nov 1987 might be mine, here in Australia.

In theory metallic paint was a no-cost option for a GB customer but I wonder if Special Paint commanded a premium against Net Landed Cost, which the dealer had to swallow? It would be great to find someone who could add hard fact to this subject.....I would imagine that there were some fairly interesting things happening to top-flight 6 and 7 series cars, too, at this point. Was GB production not combined with Australia's? If so, the last Polaris silver RHD M535i Nov 1987 might be mine if so, here in Australia. I haven't looked at her for a while, she's in the garage under covers. Factory optioned with Leather 'captain's' seats, 4HP22EH and a 3.65 LSD. Unmolested and went really well when I bought her 5 years ago. One day, I'll start doing the bodywork and put her back on the road..
