the corrosion on the pipes is common on E28's sadly. Seen it many times

Good to see you're using the car, not many E28 owners dare to drive the car in the wet because of rust, not grip.

I could have made the same picture of my Sebring, since it has been sitting outside my house for a week with 30cm of snow on top ( can you believe that, straight out of 2yr hibernation ) so it looked like NASCAR silhouette racer

Well Wout,

No grip is not an issue; that can be plain fun; however, E28S M5's will allways be more valuable then any E34S M5, be it they are tourings or not due to them being the start of a new market segment. It is the first dynamic sportscar in a disguise of a saloon. One may argue that the Jag Mk 2 3.8 with 220hp was the first, but it misses the sheer dynamics of an E28 M5 and E34 M5 that makes the distinction between a sports-oriented supersaloon (W109 300SEL 6.3, W124 E500/500E and E39 M5) and a true sports car.

I am methodically exchanging all the bolts and nuts and would like to keep its current looks. I want to give the differential and rear suspension the treatment of Richard Baxter's E30S M3 sport evo, but that is another project scheduled for 2010/2011. When I am done with the drive-train, #231 simply is too perfect to drive in winter-like conditions.

Raymond , I understand your view on E28 M5s and respect your decision to keep yours mint .

I personally enjoy driving my cars and believe that they benefit more from being used regularly than they do from being laid up . In fact , I said as much to our good friend Richard Baxter recently , as I fear that too many owners get wrapped up in restoring their beloved cars and miss out on the precious joy of actually driving them !

Diamond Diana will never be a garage queen but has received praise from motoring journalists in relation to her mechanical / handling wellbeing !

Merry Christmas to all ......

Few things are as rewarding as driving your E28 M5 through Suffolk's country roads , as dusk falls , on a beautiful winter's eve :

Diamond Diana has managed to get herself featured in this month's , March edition , of BMWCar magazine alongside a few of her sisters .

See the ' What's In Your Garage ' feature if you get the chance to pick up a copy .

Meanwhile , I will be changing the PAS fluid reservoir filter ( part #11 ) soon . Has anyone carried out this procedure and know how it all comes apart ?

Congrats!
The power steering reservoir is a dirty work, loosen the 2 hoses at the pump, let themmoil drain, ad pump the brake pedal to put out all the oil in the bomb.
Then loosen all the hoses getting to the reservoir, ath take each one apart, last take away nr 16 and the last hose which you won't be able to get until are all loosen away.
Always change the steering fluid anc the filter every 3 years, will keep you ristem much more in working order.
Why do you change the reservoir?

Pay attention, the clamped hoses, are special hoses, should be changed every 10 years, and ONLY with the origginall one, normal hoses don't react goog with atf and pressure, fire danger !

I replaced the entire reservoir for cosmetic reasons a few years ago; I worked according to the same procedure as 'batmobile' recently when replacing and filling the ATF oil.

Decided to change the PAS reservoir filter today and removed the pipes at the power steering pump , draining all fluid from reservoir .

Removed the two small pipes from the side of the reservoir and the larger pipe at the very base of the reservoir before lifting the unit from the engine bay .

There are 3 clips on the rod that holds the guaze in the reservoir , one above the guaze and two below . One clip is directly below the guaze and the second holds the spring , that surrounds the centre rod , in place .

After the clips are removed , the reservoir can be turned upside down so that the plate and filter simply drop out .

See pic of parts ordered , including filter , gasket and reservoir lid sticker :

The resrvoir removed from car :

Now , after doing the job , the steering feels great and there are no more groany noises from the system ......great !

What I can't help thinking though is , why didn't I simply syphon the fluid out of the reservoir , remove the guaze and clips and then use a large magnet to lift the plate and filter out of reservoir , before dropping a new one in ?
