E28 idle surge/hesitation

Help! My '88 is acting up, and it's really frustrating. Background: Built 3/87, mods are K&N filter, Dinan eprom; Remanufactured DME by Programa. After a plug/cap/rotor change and then sitting for 9 days in Norfolk VA, car developed a mid-range miss at 3000-4000 rpm. Next day, it would crank but not fire up. Towed to dealer, who cleaned fuel fouled plugs, check fuel pressure and vacuum, and got it started. Vacuum around 7 in; is that normal? Replaced ignition wires with 8mm set, ceaned air flow meter connection and plugs, replaced head-to airbox breather hose. Ran fine for about 20 minutes. Sat in parking lot, started up, idle surged from 800 to about 1500, steady. Pulled away in traffic, got a really bad miss/hesitation in 2nd around 2000 rpm. Cleared up, but shook the whole car. Local dealer can't connect up for diagnostics; car has 14 pin harness, they have 20 pin harness. Any ideas????

Hi,

I had the same problem. First time he just cleaned the injectors. He did nothing. Second time he changed the air flow meter, (whole piece). Now the car runs perfect. ( not a M5 e28, a Bmw 535i).
Hope this help.

Mikel.

Hi, Mikel. I have since figured it out with help from the BMW CCA tech line and my mwchanic back home. The thermostat is sticking open. Coolant sensors detect low temps, and the computer thinks it's still cold enough to richen the mixture. Result-fouled plugs, rough running/hesitation, terrible fuel economy. I'm replacing the thermostat, coolant temp sensor and thermal time switch and the coolant. Thanks for responding.

Ralph
