E28 M5 - Gearbox help

Afternoon all,

I have for the past two years been the proud owner of car number 169, Delphin Grey, enjoying every single aspect of driving such a raw and powerfull car. Absolutely love this car!!
This is until a few weeks ago when driving back from a weekend in Bournemouth the gearbox started to grind and I was having trouble shifting into gears. I managed to get the car home but the next day had it towed to my mechanic. A few days later the phone rang to say that the gearbox had next to nothing oil inside (had been leaking from the front) and when he opened it up the gears were blue from heat, in other words knackered. I have been hearing noises from the gearbox, but thought that this was rollover noise (after researching on the net, i.e would make a noise when clutch pedal was not pressed down, and go away once pressed). My fault for not getting this seen to earlier.
I'm in need of advice from you experienced E28 M5 owners. I am wondering how easy it is to get another second hand gearbox for such a rare car?, would it be easy to find parts to recondition my existing gearbox? or by a fully reconditioned box from BMW (if available) with a hefty price to match it?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi Ash sorry to hear about your gearbox woes and I am no expert on how to repair them but I few months ago #070 was sadly written off due to body damage but engine and gearbox I believe were undamaged. Owner Dan Kelly sold complete car to Jimmy owner of another M5 to use I believe as a donor vehicle. Both Dan and Jimmy regularly contribute to this forum although I have no contact details for either of them but it is possible that Jimmy will have a spare gearbox from one of those cars.

Also I am compiling database on E28 M5's and I have not come across 169 before. Any chance of a few details and maybe even a picture. my email address is jeremy.woodcock@hotmail.co.uk

Welcome to the board Ash, although it could have been in better circumstances by the sound of it!

Sorry to read about your gearbox woes....isn't this the car you bought from Munich Legends back in 2010?

Chris Harris may also have a spare gearbox for you, as he has just picked up the wreck of No. 13 (ex-davidoli & Tim Horsley car).

Another UK RHD E28 M5 written off

Good luck in getting No.169 back on the road.
