Well after getting the car back from service, I have more service to do on it. However this is purely preventative.....
I have decided that it is time to replace the fuel lines.
Here is a pic a fellow E34 M5er sent me of an S38B36 that was
roasted due to a broken fuel line:
Ok so here is the procedure as I understand it
Aquire 6-7ft of BMW Fuel Line. Depressurize fuel system by
pulling Fuel Pump relay, running starter, and removing gas cap.
Remove intake boot, breather hoses, and plenum. Removal of
the coolant resvoir tank screws ease the removal of the plenum.
Cut oil dipstick breather hose to allow the plenum to be lifted out.
Locate frame end of rubber lines under brake bomb. Take fuel
lines off of the injector (fuel) rail. Cutting might be necessary.
Remove the ends of the line next to the frame. Remove plastic
protector from old lines and install on new lines. Install new
lines on injector rail and on the frame end of the lines, by
rethreading the lines etc.
Where is the fuel pump relay? I know that it is possible to run the
fuel pump by jumping the pins on the relay. Which pins?
The fuel line on the 88 M5 looks like it is the same kind of line on
my 525i and 740i. Is it the same or is there a specific line?
Am I missing anything else? Can all of the parts already on the
engine (clamps, protectors, not fuel line of course) be reused if
they are in good condition?
Would it be a good time to also replace the brake bomb? Might
as well if it is easily accessable.
Thanks in advance
