Thanks much appreciated.
PM sent with instructions, but M-fun has it covered I think.
Using the site is definitely not intuitive, so I've provided some basic steps to hopefully get you there.

Cheers

Incidentally going back to the start of the Thread Car 041 being Schwarz Black not Diamond Black, we think we may have the first E28 in Schwarz Black 003 with the Pearl Beige Leather interior 0206. She is in for a full winter restoration at the body shop with windows etc out back to bare metal with new wings, sills etc so hoping to have her ready and back on road for Spring next year. The Pearl interior has been to auto trim at Leicester who have done an excellent job repairing seat bolsters and repairing the piping which was split and they have restored the leather rather than replacing it on the seats as we wanted them to retain their patina without looking brand new. Also restored all the leather on the gear lever surround and hand brake handle.

We know 001 (sadly burnt out and believed scrapped) was Salmon Silver metallic 203 does anybody know what spec 002 was and whether it still exists your help as always would be appreciated.
Jez,

002 was Zinnober with Black leather. It wasn't registered until Feb '87 so was probably in stock for a while as it then went into the BMW GB fleet. A bit of research I did suggests that this was the car that ended up at MIRA as their driver training car in the mid-90's.

Thanks guys that is really great and I really appreciate your help. By way I did print off all data sheets last night which was just what I needed.

So do you think that with 003 we have is the oldest surviving E28 M5 of the UK RHD cars?

Jez,

Possibly, yes: rather depends on your definition of 'oldest'! Although built in the same week (20) of 1986, 004 was registered (on a distinctive cherished mark) before your 003....as were 012, 014 and 015, which were built week 21. The latter 3 were all BMW GB Press cars, on 'C' prefix plates. So it's a close-run thing....

When on business at MIRA earlier in the year, what appeared to be the current 'driver trainer' drove past the gatehouse as the security guard was booking me in (and sticking seals over the camera lenses of my phones). What was it? An E34 M5....no doubt there will be someone out there who can oblige with information - perhaps including what happened to their red E28 M5!

Regards

Mfiver

Steve,

Why don't you just call them up and ask them. I don't think it would be priviliged information and it is a legitimate request as it is quite a famous car in BMW circles. I for one would love to know where she is today......definitely worthy of a restoration if it hasn't met the crusher.

Me too - this is a car of some historic importance, so hopefully MIRA have recognised this and preserved the old girl.

I don't remember if on total BMW or somewhere else, there was an article about the Mira's M5, still alive in the recent ast, unfortunately very damaged from the installation of a roll bar.

MFiver I totally get what you are saying about the true age of the cars I think what I should say it the lowest chassis number known to still be in circulation.

BMWWGN and bayerische I have emailed MIRA to see if they can shed any light on the fate of 002 I will let you know if they respond and what they say.

Got a copy of the ULTIMATE M5 book as you suggested off ebay for £4.49 so looking forward to reading that from cover to cover.

That's great - will be interested to learn what transpires!

My theory that the MIRA car is 002 is based on the following, derived from text and photos in the reproduced BMW Car article:

Zinnober red (photos)
Bright trim (photos)
DWA alarm (301 - photos)
Registered 1987 (text)

Of the 21 cars built in Zinnober, 5 had no factory options (though all 5 had leather...) so they are discounted (no 301). The other 16 cars had either 339 Satin Black Chrome, or 715 M-technic aerodynamic styling kit - or both. Put another way 002 was the only Zinnober car with bright trim and without the M-technic kit.

However, I've been wrong plenty of times before....

Regards

Mfiver
