A new thermostat would have cured that as well.

The thermostate is less than 7 months old. The old one did the same thing.

Weird. It is supposed to maintain temp irrespective of how cold or large the reservoir/radiator water is.

Correct.....but theory & reality are to different things!

The surface area of five cores means that when the thermostat does open the cooling effect of that massive surface area is magnified well beyond a standard e34 M5 radiator. Remember that the water pump does not stop running or slow down! I could try an undersized pulley for it but I'm leaning towards having another radiator made that has the same surface area of the standard radiator if push comes to shove.

Mine holds 8L more coolant than a standard radiator! That's a lot!!

The thing is though by covering the front of the rad I'm protecting it from road debris & the extra capacity means that I can drive the car harder for longer which is no bad thing. I've adjusted the electric fan to come on later too which has also helped.

I have also been unscrewing the expansion tank top after the car has been on a run to release any trapped air.

Finally found it!

Finally found my cooling problem

It turns out it's the radiator! The welding around aux coolant temp bung (That I didn't ask for) is porous It only shows it crap build quality once the system is full pressurized.

The pictures shows the tell tail signs. I have put some type of putty around it for the moment which has worked. The idea is to see it the rad is leaking elsewhere also. When I calm down I will give the radiator chap a call. I want a completely new radiator from him.

What a waist of £750!

Radiator removed & repaired. Both drain plugs removed & holes welded up. Metal blanking plate fitted. Old fan fixings removed & radiator repainted.

Just an update.

Have now completed just over 100 miles since the radiator was repaired & modified. I have this happy medium now where the temp needle sits at 11.30 min to 11.55 max.

11.30 is constant when the car is in motion at any speed. This includes driving slowly through town with frequent stops or 80-85 with the cruise control set on the motorway. The cooling fan is only really activated in town or after a long-ish run after coming to a stand still.
With the summer weather the UK has had over the past five days it has been a real pleasure to watch the car behave just like a standard item.

The size of the blanking plate I had welded to the radiator is spot on. The cooling fan is inoperative for 90% of the time

Petrol.... I'm using Tesco 99 octane all the time now. The engine just runs so much better on it than any other brand. I'm also getting really good mpg which is a real surprise!

A great build , I enjoy reading this type of thread.

What always amuses me on the M5board is the photos of new parts in BMW packaging proudly displayed which is like car porn for all of us

Good stuff

Fan is made by Kenlow. It's a twin speed unit. The most powerful version. If you look at the first few pages of the thread you will see it in more detail.
