Rev counter isssues

Hi chaps - a query for the grizzly bearded M5ers ... my brother has just purchased his first E28 M5, and is still awaiting transfer however has been notfied the rev counter does not work. The batteries on the circuit board have been replaced with new ones and still no joy. I know Davidoli had similar experiences with Diamond Diana ?

Any thoughts on what could be the issue ?

Thanks again.

Congratulations to your brother on the purchase.
I believe that was James Miller's car - a very nice example, with only 104,000 kms.

It must be time to update the E28 M5 registry - what with Bayerische sending his to Australia and this SA car going north to the UK.
I guess the score remains even, between northern & southern hemispheres!

Sorry can't help on the tacho problem.

Cheers

Sounds like the southern hemisphere is coming up trumps because the car is staying in SA !!

It's just me staying in London for the weather!

Rev Counter

I know it sounds very basic....but check the fuses first.

They need to be in perfect order - it's possible for the conductor to crack, which may not be visible without the aid of a magnifying glass. They are cheap so it's worth renewing them all - when new the conductor is a copper colour which quickly oxidises. Make sure the contacts in the box are clean, too.

If the cluster has been removed recently then it may be wise to check that all the plugs are correctly refitted.

Regards

Mfiver

In relation to my rev counter issue , the actual dial itself appears to be the problem .

I did manage to trigger a mini-revival prior to getting the batteries replaced , simply by removing the rev counter and giving the whole assembly a good spray of electrical contact cleaner .

This cure didn't last for more than a day or so though and new batteries did not resurrect the rev counter either !

Apparently one must take care with the fuel and temp guages when putting the instrument cluster back together , by easing them up to their upper needle levels immediately prior to reassembling the cluster , so that the needles return to their rightful place after assembly .
