E28 M535I Tappets

Hello !!! I have migrated from the E39 board to the E28 board!

Hoping for some advice;

Is there an online resource for info on setting tappets? I have just accquired a 1987 M535I that has recently had a top end rebuild and now that she's bedded in the tappets are noisy as hell.

Have ordered a Haynes but its not here yet. Is there any info or good advice out there?

Thanks
matt

Hi Matt and welcome to M5 Board the Link below will take you to an online manual for the M30 engine as fitted to 635 CSI, same operation to check your valve clearances page 331, use the recommended figures from your handbook for feeler gauges

Thanks, Thanks very much

To adjust each on:

You have to do them in order, and am I correct in assuming that when you adjust each one the corresponding piston should be at TDC? Iv never done this before.....

So, turn the engine to find TDC on each one and then adjust, right?

NOT have 1 at TDC and then adjust through the order

p.s check the clearance in the handbook? As in owners manual?

Il put a last post in case anyone in the future searches for 'tappets' and comes across this thread.

Adjusted them last night. Was advised to set them to either 12thou hot or 10thou cold. I set them cold.

Perfect !!!!!!

This setting is not whats in the Haynes but what Noel at NCB Autocraft advised. And he was right !

Tools req for the job

10mm spanner
10mm socket
small piece of wire for the adjuster
feeler guages
screwdriver or small socket for intake system

Large spanner to turn engine, if belts tight enough you can do what I did and turn off the fan nut.

It'll take 15 minutes to strip the parts to get to the tappets/rockers

@45 minutes for a newbie to adjust

@25 mins to put back together.

Hi ,

I'm not so sure that your figures are correct .

IIRC the recommended tolerances for valve clearances on the M88/3 are 0.30 to 0.35mm and 12thou is approx 0.30mm i.e. on the tight side !

Valve clearances should always be measured cold .
