Dave,

Many thanks - I am certain that whatever it is, it affects all of the injectors simultaneously - when it died, it just went straight down, there's no misfiring or juddering. So I'm certain something is killing the electrical supply, probably to the pump. I still have a relay in mind but having tried a new fuel pump relay in all of the positions in which it will physically fit - made no difference.

I also have a new DME relay ('main relay') - but will admit to being unsure about which location this might go in (it is a 5-pin pattern, I think).

The one thing that I need and don't have is time - bah!

Regards

Mfiver

I didn't see these basic questions addressed, so...

How much fuel is in the tank?
Are you getting fuel to the rail?

If it's low on fuel, it could be as simple as a bad in tank pump.

swatterssr:

Good point - I hadn't mentioned fuel contents.

Haven't had time to do any more checks...but the fuel tank is almost full and the fuel is relatively fresh (refuelled the same day it broke down). No, I didn't fill it with diesel - I checked the till receipt whilst waiting for the AA man!

But thinking about it, the problem first occurred relatively soon after I had a new tank fitted, though this was some time ago, so I will take the panel off in the boot and check the connections to the lift pump.

I will also check for fuel at the rail and the vacuum connection to the pressure regulator. I did think it was electrical (AA man, possible temperature correlation and the way it simply stops when it fails) but maybe not.

I need to stop guessing, get off my backside and go and check it out...

Many thanks to all posters...

Regards

Mfiver

Hi Mfiver,

It looks as though we may have a similar problem (see my Fuel supply problem thread). I have only sufferred the cutting out problem since I installed a new tank and transfer pump earlier this year. The problem cutting out did not start immediately but I do remember having a huge problem getting the car to start after the initial tank installation. I replaced the transfer pump as one of the electrical connectors at the top had corroded off and came away with the harness.

I have now replaced both the fuel pump and DME relays and I am waiting for a complete set of new fuses to arrive (the 23 year old ones don't look too clever). However I have always had this nagging doubt that the problem is fuel-supply related. As the car starts perfectly and cuts out after a few minutes it seems like it 'uses up' the fuel in the pipes between the fuel rail and tank and then effectively runs-out, as though the transfer pump has not woken up to fill the supply chain and there is an airlock in the system somewhere. I don't know if it is possible to get an airlock within the fuel system but that is the best way I can think of describing it. When it cuts out there is no warning, the last time was interesting as it did it as I lifted off to take a corner and, of course, I lost all power steering assistance. Good job nothing was coming the other way!

Maybe there is a common cause to our woes? I will keep you posted if I find a solution.

I've found that my Dremel with the small wire brush attachment is an excellent tool to use to clean the fuse contacts before installing new fuses.
The Tool can also be used to clean the ends of the old fuses for re-installation.

You might want to check #1 fuse for cleanliness and proper contact tension.

Good luck guys...
