Newbie, proud new owner of RHD #13 !!

Hello all,

Picked her up from Newcastle last Saturday and had a wonderful run back down to the big smoke, big grin for all of 300 miles!!

I'm a very happy boy and now the proud owner of my two favourite German six pots - the other one also has two camshafts but the engine is in the boot I've yearned for one ever since my Dad got rid of a Henna Red 528 he bought new in '85..

I believe she may have been previously owned by another member of this forum??

For a 23 year old that's been around the world a few times over (currently 191K) she's in remarkably good health. Certainly feels like she's giving most of the 286 horses she would have been pushing in her youth!!

Everything (and I mean everything) works, except for the headlight wipers.. any tips on sorting them?

There are two other obvious issues to get straight onto, one is a knock at the front end which feels/sounds like a nearside drop-link issue but I'm yet to get underneath her any recommendations for a parts source?

The other is a bit puzzling... it seems to be completely intermittent but brought on only by stop-start driving in town - basically one minute the engine is behaving impeccably, smooth running, stable idle, everything good. Then, suddenly you come to a halt and she doesn't want to idle, seems to be bogging down - you can keep her running on the throttle but she's not happy, feels/sounds like overfuelling... Then, get her moving again and she's fine.

No other running problems at all... sometimes she doesn't do it at all, drove right across town on Sunday night without any hint of a problem, but I guess traffic was flowing more freely than it might usually... a bit odd, any ideas?

Sorry for all the questions!!

Will upload some pics and keep you all updated, I plan to use the car and gradually bring her up to the highest standard I can afford to.

Oh, one more question, is there an experienced independent in the London area anyone would recommend to look after her?

Cheers all, will post some pics in due course

Tim

Hi, congratis!!
More info about, like otside inside colour colbo, options and so on?
For the headlamp wipers, check and clena the control module on the reservoir and clena the plugs in the back of the headlights right hand, there are 3 round plugs, one is for fog light, one for the flasher, the third for the headlamp cleaning.

Thanks for the tips Batmobile! Where in Italy are you? I travel to Italy on business pretty often, was in Florence last week...

The car is Diamond Black with Barley leather.

Shadowline trim.

Rear blind.

A/C.

No body kit.

Not sure what other options there were?

Hi I live in northern Italy, near Garda lake, maybe we could meet in the future, last year i met with Tore.
Barley what does it Mean?
Options were leather, with more estensions possible (only seats, seatts+full door cards, whole care included headlining and boot, bison nappa or buffalo)
Uk M5s were richly optioned as standard, but you could always order sound system, heated seats, airbag, headlamp aim control, rear headrest, bodykit, fire extinguisher, self levelling suspension, and other little things.

Lovely place! I come to Milan but not so often, most of my trips now are to Pisa, Florence or Naples.

I will be coming to Milan towards the end of this year though..

Barley is the colour of the interior - its a light tan really.

Leather is on seats, door cards and centre console.

She has rear headrests and headlamp aim control, no bodykit or fire extinguisher.

How can I tell if the car has SLS? Is it a problem area?

Toolkit and First aid kit are untouched! Even have the torch in the glove box!

Stereo is not original but I think the speakers are - they look like period Pioneer units.

I want to find a head unit that looks factory (blaupunkt I guess) but has CD and possibility to attach ipod. Will a CD43 fit the car??

Very nice, the colour name of leather should be perlbeige or natur, coming on year.
sls is a troublee, you can spot it if you have a pumo in the spare tire place.
the period bmw speakers were bmw badged and covered with grilles wearing no name and colour coded.
Hope to meet you in end opf year then!

Congratulations on your acquisition of a classic , rare , UK RHD E28 M5 .

Your interior is pearl beige leather .

Where abouts in London are you ?

Bexley Motor Works are a bloody good specialist in South East London / Kent .

Phil Crouch of CPC Performance Engineering www.cpcpe.com , tel 01923 283274 are based in Hertfordshire and know all there is to know about E28 M5s , especially as proprietor Phil owned one for years !

P.s. I owned your car once upon a time and it has had a fair bit of work carried out in recent years , including valve clearances , control arms etc but to my knowledge , no recent timing chain renewal .

That front end knock does not seem to be an arb link , as that has been renewed .

It may be spring / damper related . Any decent specialist should be able to diagnose it for you .

As for the errattic running ........that's something new and could be a number of things , although it sounds fuel related .

It's great to hear that car is back in the hands of an obvious enthusiast and you will receive plenty of help and friendly advice on this forum which has some of the most knowledgable and mature members that I have ever had the pleasure to converse with !

Welcome to the board RHD#13,

Glad to hear your car has found a new enthusiastic home. Plenty of good advice here on the board. I wish i could help with your erratic idle problem as I have a similar issue. When the engine is cold it idles fine, but when hot it idles at 1500rpm and then goes back to 700-750 rpm. I even replaced the AFM but it did not solve the problem.

I will try your suggestion of the temp sensors Batmobile, where are they located?

Post some pics when you get a chance and best of luck with your new purchase.

Regards,

Bayerische

RealOEM.com BMW E28 M5 Cooling System Water Hoses
nr 9 and 11
the other is for the instruments.
Or could be the throttle switch, nr 12 of:
RealOEM.com BMW E28 M5 Throttle Housing Assy
or could be very simply the butterfly linkage that jams when hot.
