e28 m5 transmission

Hi all. Does anybody know if there is any other BMW gearbox that is a subsitute for the one found in an e28 m5 - ie same ratios and a direct swop?

And if not, what is the original gearbox for these cars ? Sorry for the newbie question!

My brother has come across a stranded M5 (not in the UK) that is stuck in 1st gear and wont budge!

Cheers.

The gearbox is the Getrag 280/5 and is the same as that fitted to the E24 M635 CSI .

Taken from BMW M Registery website :

All E28 M5s have the Getrag 280/5 five-speed manual gearbox. Gear ratios are as follows: 3.51 (1), 2.08 (2), 1.35 (3), 1.00 (4), .81 (5).

What kind of gearbox does the E34 M5 have?
All M5s built before May of 1994 utilize a Getrag 280/5 five-speed manual gearbox with the following ratios: 3.51 (1), 2.08 (2), 1.35 (3), 1.00 (4), 0.81 (5).

This would suggest that an early E34 M5 Getrag 280/5 gearbox could be fitted to an E28 M5 but I have never actually done so .

Perhaps , some of our more esteemed members could confirm ?

Thanks mate. The 280/5 I assume is the dogleg?

From my understanding, the dogleg is not the most favoured of gearbox's - if starting from a clean slate, what gearbox/transmission would people on this forum install in an E28 M5 in trying to keep it as original as pssible in terms of ratios but improving what may have been a flawed design with hindsight.

Cheers !

There was never a dogleg gearbox in the E28 M5 as far as I know. They all have a standard pattern box. I believe the dogleg box was only offered on the M535i.

You can't fit an E34 Getrag 280 to an E24/E28 as it is missing the holes for the speed / rpm sensors in the bell housing, however, the early 'box can be fitted to the later cars. I've had to do this on a few occasions when an E34 box has been beyond economical repair. If you are stuck , a 260 overdrive from an 84 -> 535i/635i will fit, provided all the external selector parts are swapped with it. The prop will need to be extended on it's splines about 25mm too - you will need to check if there is adequate length on the splines to accommodate this extension safely !

E28 M5 gearbox options - use a 265

my memory was wrong, it's a 265 the mye28 thread refers to, not a 260

MyE28.com: BMW E28 5-series Resource - View topic - Getrag 280 to 265 in an M5

probably easier than finding a 280, and cheaper than rebuilding one

looks like you need a late (85 and on) 535
