brake calipers

hi guys
im in the process of sorting out the brakes on my e28,done the back calipers and hand brake with no real problems to speak off,now im doing the front.having taken off the wheel its obvious that the calipers are seized and the seals are beyond repair so instead of messing around freeing the calipers and fitting new seals im going to buy a new/second hand pair,is it possible to fit e34 or e32 calipers?

Hi , yes , you can fit the 315mm front discs and single pot ATE calipers from the 3.6 E34 M5 and early pre 94 3.8 M5 under standard 16" E28 M5 wheels .

There are also many other options , but I am aware that you have been offered a set of E34 M5 brakes from one of your posts on the E34 forum .

hi davidoli
you seem to know your stuff so i wondered if you could help me out?as you have probably gathered im trying to restore a m535i that was given to me and having to upgrade the brakes to e34 m5,s i striped all the discs and calipers ready for when i get hold of a set.but ive noticed that the rear hubs are still quite difficult to turn even without any brakes what so ever on the car,is this the norm or could the diff be on the way to seizing too?

Hi gjy , everyone seems to know their stuff in the wonderful world of the internet ......but thank you for the compliment !

The fact that the M535i that you are restoring has been sitting around for a while will not assist any of the moving parts to rotate freely , so I wouldn't assume that the lsd is about to seize .....you can always replace the diff oil as a precautionary measure and check that the drive shafts and wheel bearings are sufficiently well greased .

Hi, I'm also wanting to rebuild the front brake calipers of my E28 M5. I have obtained the rebuild kits contaning seals and dust caps, but unfortunately brake pistons are not separately available. The chrome layer has corroded around edge on some pistons, so I want to replace then. I want to keep the stock brake setup. Does anyone have an alternative source for these pistons or for having them rechromed?

The last time I spoke to this breaker, he had some calipers from an e28 M5 that he had broken for parts. It was a while ago now, but it might be worth a phone call.

If he wants a used set , then I have a pair of original E28 M5 calipers here , after putting the single pot E34 M5 ATE calipers on Diamond Diana .
