Oil Leak from front of engine under head

1988 M5-New to M5 and have an oil leak on passenger side under head, coming from something I cannot identify . It protrudes and has round disk. It is over the air conditioner compressor. Leaks pretty good(1qt per 200 Mi), and seems to have no purpose. What is this thing? Is there anyplace on the net where I can get an exploded view of the M5 engine?
Thanks,
Scott

Hello,

Everything on the M88/3 and S38 engines have a function. To really help you, you have to be more specific, but I think that you have one of the following problems:

1: The chain guides are mounted with unsealed bolts through the timing chain house. In time these can get loose. Check these.

2: Leaking gaskets between the front cover and the engine block.

3: The bolts which mount the front cover to the engine block are loose.

4: Leaking gasket between the cylinder head and the front cover. This is the cylinder head.

5: Failing tensioner.

6: Front Cranckshaft seal leaks.

Good luck,

Raymond

M5 oil leak

Thanks Raymond, But the leak is comming from some apendage on the upper block in front(passenger side). My mechanic, who is familiar W/e28 but not M5 has no clue to what this is. It is definatly on the pressure side of the oil galleries. It is not electrical and seems to have no mechanical function.
Mystery?
Thanks,
Scott

i can usually get exploded printouts from my BMW dealer of most M5 items. I think if you ask nicely they will oblige. Or take it to a dealer and ask for a quote for the work to be done. They will have to tell you wats involved in the job, and you dont have to let tehm do the work!!! easy!!

Regards

No, it is not out of car. but I am not deeling with it, since it is cold as $#@& outside, and my garage is full. The M5 is also somewhat a sore spot with the wife, being an expensive toy
