The M1 had the M88/1 with a slightly different head. HP was about 277 compared to the 286 of the M88/3. The M88 also had to be modified to allow it to be installed at an angle (M1 engine was fully upright). I think the M1 also had a dry sump, but that may only have been the racing cars. Injection on the M1 was mechanical.

Not entirely correct:
M88: 277hp (@6500RPM) NA engine for E26S production model.
M88/1: 490hp (@9000RPM) NA engine for group IV Pro Car series.
M88/2: Up to 950hp (@8500RPM) Forced induction engine (max 1.6atu) for Group V Pro Car series.
M88/3: 286hp (@6900RPM) NA engine for E24 and E28S production models.
M88, M88/1 and M88/2 indeed have a dry sump lubrication and a mechanical Kugelfisher injection system. The injection pump (13 51 1 304 490) is listed as not available in the parts catalogue so when time comes (and it will) it needs to be overhauled which is very costly.
In that respect, I am extremely hapy that Motorsport Gmbh used Bosch Motronic 1.2 for the M88/3.
I have pictures of M88/1 and M88/2 engine to support the following fact, but am not at the liberty to post them due to a (albeit unofficial) NDA. The engine block of the M88, M88/1 and M88/2 engines is different then that of the M88/3 that is much weaker since it lacks some castings that the other variants for the E26S have. These castings at least increase the rigidity of the engine block needed for the pro car variants M88/1 and M88/2 and most likely were also needed to enlarge the cooling capacity.
Also, the M88 engine has a duplex timing chain (see parts cataogue). This unlike the SOHC M90 engine (E12 M535i) that very much resembles the M88 engine, including the above mentioned gaskets.
With other words. There are much more differences between the engines within the M88 family then the specifications of the M88 and M88/3 imply.
