I AM LOOKING FOR OPINION FOR CASTROL TWS 10W60 FOR MY M6

I HAVE HEARD THAT IF I PUT ON MY CAR SYNTETIC OIL IT WILL START TO LEAK FROM THE GASKETS ?

ALSO I THINK THIS IS THE BEST OIL FOR BMW 10W60 TSW CASTROL MADE IN GERMANY.

I USE TO HAVE E28 M5 WITH 190.000 MILES AND I RUN IT WITH 15W50 MOBIL-1 AND IT WAS PERFECT, NO LEAKS NO ISSUES.

I WANT TO GET ANY OPINION FOR THE OIL.
MY CAR HAS 100.000 MILES AND UNTIL NOW I ALWAYS PUT THE 15W40 MINERAL OIL FOR DIESEL AND GASOLINE ENGINES AND I LIKE IT. OF COURSE THE SYNTETIC OIL HAS MORE ADDITIVES AND IT MAKES IT BETTER THAN THE REGULAR.

I WANT TO START RUN MY M6 WITH CASTROL 10W60 TO KEEP EXTEND THE ENGINE LIVE.

ANYONE WITH AN OPINION PLEASE RESPOND.
THANKS

It is certainly possible that on an older engine with hardened seals there may be a leakage issue with synthetic. It may burn it too - modern engines have better manufacturing tolerances. This was even admitted to me by an oil company rep a few years back when I looked at using synthetic for a fleet of trucks. Things may have changed since then, of course.

A 10W/60 gives greater temperature range, in therory....I think. But 15/40 is what the factory recommended and I'm sure these engines can go for big mileages on the standard oil grade if they are maintained.

Stick with 15/40, change it at least as often as the lights tell you to and spend the money you save, elsewhere on the car, in my view.

Bear in mind that long oil drain periods are becoming the norm - so less oil gets sold. The oil companies are in business to make money and selling premium grades to enthusiasts is a good way of doing just that. Sorry if that's not the answer you wanted....I'm just old and cynical!

Others will no doubt have their own opinions, which will be equally valid!

Regards

Mfiver

I quote Mfiver, on my old BMWs (3.0csl, 635, 535 schnitzer, 735 alpina, M635csi and so on) I go on with castrol gtx magnatec or Mobil 1, the other oils only get burnt a lot....

I run it in my m5. Seems to burn off less than the Mobil1 15w50 and I swear the engine feels smoother with it. It smells nice too

I also run Castrol Edge ( as the TWS is now called ) 10w60 in my E34 3.6 M5 ......it runs smoothly , doesn't leak from anywhere and I don't burn more than a litre every 1500 miles of regular combined driving . Some users even report improved MPG after running this oil .

I get mine from Opie Oils in the UK and their service is exemplary with next day delivery free on any order over £30 ......

However , Opie recommended Silkolene Pro S 5w50 for my E28 though I have yet to put it in my M88/3 due to the fact that i fear that it may be too thin ....I am currently running Valvoline 10w40 in number 66 after it's recent timing chain and guide renewal .

I personally tend to change the oil every 3t miles due to the relative low cost of oil changes i.e. cost of oil ( £60 max ) , filter and an hours labour .

Each to their own.........there are many differing opinions on oil !
