I am a professional detailer and this is how I do mine.

I do it with the engine warm. Warm compartments clean and degrease better I find. You do need to be selective as to where you spray things although I have never needed to cover an alternator once. I actually do this with the motor running so that if water by chance is getting into somewhere where it shouldn't be, you'll hear it.

I start off by hosing down the engine compartment and body panels around it. Then I prespray my Automagic Triple 7 1:4 diluted all purpose cleaner and let that sit for a minute or two. I have a bucket with water and car soap in it that I use to dip my mitt and soft bristled brush in. I use those two cleaning untensils as I find between the both of them , they can scrub just about anywhere in the compartment.

After I am done scrubbing, I rinse the motor off with the garden hose and while it's still wet in there, I spray Auto Magic Dress-it (water based dressing and conditioner) all over and then shut the hood. I let the car run for another 2-3 mins then shut it off. Come back 10 mins later, pop the hood and by now the water should have all evaporated and you have a fresh, clean and conditioned engine bay.

They're a professional detailing shop and have met the owner Phil when I had my M5 detailed.

Phil is very good at what he does and specializes in premium cars.

303 Aerospace cleaner, a soft bristle brush, a garden hose, and about 20 minutes is all you should need.

Scrubbing bubbles

I have a post on this already. Try scrubbing bubbles. It is $2.99 a can.

The best engine cleaner!

Cover your HID ballasts and bulbs. Cover any exposed connectors with Saran wrap.

Spray on Scrubbing bubbles everywhere in the engine. Scrub with a toothbrush heavily greased areas. Let it soak for 2 minutes, then hose off with water.

Start the engine, let it warm up for 5 minutes, then let me know what you think.

I do mine 4 times a year. See picture attached after scrubbing bubbles treatment.
