604 intro & E34 M5 Aircare Question

Just thought I would say hello to all the Canucks out there, specifically the Vancouver ones. New to the M5 since this summer and absolutely love my E34 M5, 3.8l. Hopefully I'll see a few of you locals out at a meet one of these days.

I wanted to field a question to anyone else local who has a E34 M5 3.8l. I ran mine through aircare recently and it passed without any issues. I did notice however that in all the categories the car "seemed" to be higher than the average, yet well below the max. I wondered if perhaps the baseline numbers were from the North American 3.6l version. Are there any other 3.8l folks out there that wouldn't mind sharing their aircare numbers? I had an issue with the car running rich before, so wanted to make sure it was not somehow related to that still.

My numbers are as follows:

Hydrocarbons: Max: 0.500 Vehicle: .3155 Average: .1892
Carbon Monoxide: Max: 9.32 Vehicle: 6.3915 Average: 4.0415
Oxides Nitrogen: Max: 1.24 Vehicle: .7842 Average: .5280

Just a small pic of my undetailed vehicle.

Those numbers dont seem to bad.

Im not too sure, But I dont believe the maximum allowable numbers are differant per model, I believe they are a general number for that model year for all vehicles. I was always curious to this for people who do motor swaps in certain cars (LS1 in S13). You'd figure a 5.7L V8 will pump out a decent amount more pollutants than a 2.4L I4 designed for economy).

Anyways shes looking very nice! Will you be attenting our local M5 meets? We might try have one more before winter but if not spring/summer will be full of them!

Hi and welcome!

That Avus blue is such a beautiful colour on these cars!
The 3.8 is definitely rare up here. Heard rumours of a 3.8 touring (Techno Voilet I believe, even rarer!) from back east that supposedly is around town.
Looking forward to meeting up and seeing a 3.8L in person!

Rich

PS, here's my numbers from last year for Aircare:

HC (ppm) Max: 87.00 Vehicle reading: 3.00 Avg Pass Reading: 6.00
CO (%) Max: 0.60 Vehicle reading: 0.00 Avg Pass Reading: 0.10
NOx (ppm) Max: 893 Vehicle reading: 30.00 Ave Pass Reading: 76.00

Beautiful car. Mind sharing some of the backstory on how it came to you? I'm assuming that as a 3.8 it is a Euro import.

Aircare standards are based on model year and displacement post 1992. Pre-1992 vehicle weight also factors in somehow. I'm assuming the average readings follow the same brackets as the standards. So, you are in with any North American big V6s and medium displacement V8s, and other 3800 lb cars.

I wouldn't worry too much about the higher than average readings...as my former E34 95 525i had consistently higher readings as well. Besides, Aircare may vanish sometime in 2010 and all of these readings would become irrelevant.

Beautiful blue colour you got there! Bet you don't drive this beast in the Winter or rain much. Love to have you come out for a meet - there's one in the works - check out a couple of threads earlier in the Canadian Forum.

Thanks for the nice comments on the car. Avus blue is my favorite color as well.

It is actually originally a JDM vehicle, with 94k on it. It looks the kms as well, ie. it is in very good shape inside and out (no rust etc. etc.). Lots of service records which is a bonus. Engine doesn't burn a drop of oil.

What it needs is a good service on all the fluids, and I need the slave and master clutch cylinders replaced (seals are getting old, and the shifting is affected).

She is gunna stay in the garage over the winter, unless we get some clear dry sunny days, and I'm keeping her outa the rain as much as I can.

I'd like to make the meet next week, but it will depend on the weather, and on if I can get it in for a service prior. I'm OCD when it comes to these beautiful cars, so I find every little out of place detail irritates me

I'll post some more pics once I get a good camera out and she's all waxed up.
