Nope. The BMW recommended oil used to be the Castrol 10w60 TWS which is ONLY available through the dealer. I looked everywhere for 10W60... closest I found was Amsoil 10W40! big difference. However, I know BMW changed their recommendation later on and my service manual says my motor can use any of the following three oils: BMW High Performance 5W30 Synthetic Oil (part# 07 51 0 017 866), Mobil 1 5W30 Synthetic, or Mobil 1 5W40 Synthetic.

I'm unsure of what the vehicle has in it currently but I know my 02 CLK 55 AMG uses Mobil 1 5W40 Synthetic and it runs great. The Beast? No clue, seems the consensus is to use the TWS, even on the 2003.

I recommend you stick with Castrol TWS 10W60 (available from BMW only unfortunately) even though some say 5W30 synthetic oil will do the job. Why chance it on the S62 engine by saving yourself less than $100 per oil change? You do have legend in your garage - fit her the best meat you can find.

For the 2000, you can ONLY use TWS. You can pretty much only get it from the dealer or online.

For those of you who wish to run 5w30. BMW's 5w30 is more like 5W40 oil. I believe the Mobil 1 5w40 is the closest to the BMW LL 5W30 as you can get.

I think most will agree all E39 M5's should run TWS 10W60 though.
