No revelation here but...
I hope this helps someone else.
Recently had to replace the starter on the M5. Would usually DYI this but it's very cold at the moment in my driveway. Took the car to a indy mechanic I've used before and trust. Replaced the starter, no issues. My car periodically throws the secondary air pump code which I clear using the OBD2 reader from under the dash. After the starter change, code reader shows error1 and can't connect with the car. Bought a new reader, same problem. Scratched head all day then opened to the hood and found the mechanic hadn't screwed down the cover of the 21 pin connector under the hood. It will only read one or the other, not both. Problem solved.
