SO my 2000 M5 broke down the other day and I had it towed to my house. When it broke down it basically stalled out and refused to drive. After I got it home a couple days later I went to turn it on and it started making a really loud rattling noise from the engine. If any one has any ideas or suggestions please feel free to tell me what you think. Thanks a lot. Below is a video of the sound.

I accept the challenge an downshift to 4th gear. As I begin to easily pull away on both cars, I get an Engine malfunction notification, which reduces my power. I drive to JMK BMW in Springfield, where the run diagnostics on the car only an get fuel pressure codes an fuel pump. They hook fuel pressure guages to it an reset everything possible in the car, an drive it at full throttle, an find no issues. The car runs even better now honestly, but they say if it happens again Ill need a new fuel pump $1800. So far so good, but I wonder if it had anything to do with the Seafoam I put in the gas tank a week ago? In any case would have loved to see how that race would have ended, ugh...

Winter is finally over, I couldn't wait to stow away the mushy Blizzaks and put on proper Dunlop Z1 star spec rubber on OE 18 x 9.5 all around. 3mm spacers and extended bolts were mandatory, along with a bit more tightening torque up front. Initial impression the Dunlops grip is ridiculous compared to the snows or Potenza all seaons I had. I still have not taken DSC off, but the acceleration is ferocious compared to the snows, which would trigger DSC in 4th and occassionally 5th gear on dry roads. The front end turns immediately, but steering is heavier. The benefit is at higher speed, the car is EXTREMELY stable. Initial braking also suffered, most likely due to extra weight of the rear rims up front along with heavier 275/35 rubber, but once the brakes grab, they stops the car quickly. I played around with tire pressure and found 38F/36R works best, with my Dinan ARB set to firm. The front end turns so sharply, I'm noticing more body roll, prompting me to look into Dinan or Eibach front sway bar upgrade. I will be taking the new setup to a mountain run soon, and shake it down at the track, more impressions to follow.:haha:

With the sun shining in London this weekend I was able to complete the first step in my upgrade plans for the stereo.

I'll be removing:

-DSP Amplifier
-TrafficMaster
-Motorola Telephone Module
-Analog TV Tuner

Then installing the MS-8 which provides input signal summing and conditioning, 8 channels of crossovers, time alignment, EQ and RCA or speaker outputs. All powered by DSP with automatic tuning and calibration.

Here are a few links:

JBL MS-8
JBL MS-8 FAQ - DIYMA.com - Scientific Car Audio - Truth in Sound Quality
JBL's MS-8 processor! - DIYMA.com - Scientific Car Audio - Truth in Sound Quality

During this phase of the upgrade, the MS-8 replaces all functions of the DSP amp. Its 8 channels of built-in amplification are running 3 channels in each front door plus the 2 subs on the parcel shelf (rear deck).

Of course changing this one component has already completely transformed the sound quality :)

It's worth pointing out for anyone looking for a simple and cost effective upgrade to the E39 M-Audio system, if you installed a MS-8 and replaced the OEM 3 way front speakers with a set of decent 2 way components, you'd probably get most of the benefit of my upgrade plans from a much smaller investment. As you'll see, your car would still look 100% original too.

Installing the MS-8

1. The beginning. The CD Changer has already been removed as I use a PhatBox hard disk system.

2. DSP Amplifier exposed.

3. All modules removed, spaghetti junction wiring to be tidied up.

4. Input harness (grey and white) connected to the OEM left and right speaker outputs. Temporary wiring of the MS-8's speaker outputs to 3 way fronts plus sub for each side, using terminal strips.

5. Everything connected for a dry run before mounting, I ran through the calibration procedure at this point. Until I run the display cable through to the passenger compartment I'll be using the MS-8 without the display (or its remote control).

I settled on these crossover settings:

UPDATE: After pulling the front door cards off a week later, I found my car did not have mid range speakers. The door location had a coaxial arrangement and there was another tweeter in mirror sail panel. See this thread http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39...iguration.html

These crossover settings were effectively running two similar tweeters at different frequencies.

Tweeter: 6k +
Mid: 2k - 6k
Midbass: 100Hz - 2k
Sub: 20Hz - 100Hz

All slopes are 24dB/octave except the subsonic which is 12dB.

6. MS-8 fits perfectly in the location used for the DSP amp.

7. I'll be using 8mm nylon sheet to mount the MS-8. 230mm wide and 300mm high, lower left corner shaved to clear a bracket.

8. Mounting holes drilled using the DSP amp as a template, then countersunk so the bolt heads are flush.

9. MS-8 mounted.

10. Everything put back together.

11. Trim refitted.

What's next?

Replacing all the speakers and installing a 5 channel amp to run the front components and subs. Two channels of the MS-8's internal amplification will be used to run the rears.

While I was under the car, there was a ******* earthquake in Virginia that went all the way to New York. We haven't had an earthquake in like 100 years, and it had to happen while I was underneath a 4000lbs vehicle. Thank god it was only a mild tremor when it got to New York, the metal ramps held, I was quite lucky.

So fun to drive, so beloved and appreciated by BMW enthusiasts, this car has been a central part of our activities and attention. This car, known as MADNES, (named due to my plan to use it as a daily driver), became very well known up and down the West Coast. We have attended two Bimmerfest events (Bimmerfest: BMW Forum, BMW News, BMW Research, BMW European Delivery, 335, M3 ), many car shows and concours events in Portland and Seattle, and was displayed at the Sunriver Festival of Cars event (Sunriver Festival of Cars 2011) for 9 years. As President of the BMW CCA Oregon Chapter (Home - BMW CCA Oregon Region), I have been very proud to display MADNES at many club events.
A recent purchase of another E34 M5 has lead to our decision to sell our beloved MADNES.
The E34 M5 is one of the most revered BMW’s ever produced. Hand assembled and custom ordered, the car was assigned to a master technician and a assistant. They assembled the car (including a hand-assembled engine) over a one week period. On Friday, an inspector tested the car, and legend says that many times, the inspector would know which technician assembled the car.
Only 422 E34 M5’s were imported into the US in 1991. You have an opportunity to continue the BMW experience by owning this rare and special car.
Our M5 is in very good condition and meticulously maintained. It is fast, has great handling, is very solid, very comfortable, has classic BMW styling, and is a head-turner.
Check out the car on the BMW M Registry: BMW M Registry - Car Detail
Background:

I was driing car about five weeks ago and al of the sudden the engine statred running very rough and I received the Increassed Emissions warning and then the Engine malfunction reduced power.
Took it to the Bimmer store in Atlanta, they adviced me that it appears to be a vanos problem. after almost four weeks picked up car and drove about 10 miles and same problem reappeared, except now there was mechanical chattering noise coming from the left side Vanos.

Did not even make it home , had car towed back to bimmer store, next day I was informed that the oil filter wa full of metal particals and that I would need a new engine.

Lucky I have a warranty, so I thought, however the warranty endorsed by USAA, called Assurant, inofrmed me that they will only cover up to $19,900 ( a used engine with installation). The bimmer store told me for 7K out of pocket I could have a new engine installed, and at the same time install new clutch for $850, no labor.
Does this sound like a good deal, and what is the advantage of the new engine, will it ake the care more sale-able in the future???
Should I look for a stroker???
Lots of quetions, need some advice please.

Thanks....:confused2

What should I use and where is the location into the block. I also read to use a large breaker bar to crack the retainer bolt. My concern is damage to the block and harmonic, more than anything the timing components. There seems to be mixed emotions on replacement of the water pump pulley (plastic) and the harmonic pulley retaining bolts ?????? I do have the pump, belts, thermostat and gaskets, is there anything I am over looking that could be an issue and should be done at this point in time. If anyone has some insight I would be most great full.

The second is a calipso red, which has been to the moon and back and is rotten and battered, but mechanically quite good as the previous owner spent thousands on upkeep. The body on the red car is too far gone to be put back on the road, so i have bought myself an e34 520i touring, into which i'm going to transplant all the running gear. my touring has working a/c and silver grey leather, but the front seats are not sport. I'm looking for a pair of sport front seats in grey leather and i also need a sport front bumper. I have the black full extended leather trim for sale from the red m5 including door trims, center console and lower dash, all in leather. I also have the working rear sls set up should anyone need any shocks, or sensors.
