Well, the window tint didn't work out the way I thought it would... the driver's side window film is not seating properly... a few bubbles and dirt trapped in there... so I'm going to have to take it back to them in the near future... so much money for crappy work!!!
Its been a crappy day in general... I went with a co-worker to target today to pick up some stuff for work... went in my 2008 VW R32... I parked... he open his door and the high wind just ripped it out of his hand and smashed the door in to the car next to us.... my door is badly dented... and its not like I can be mad at the guy.. its not really his fault... sucks...
I was beat at the end of my day... came home and found my mother sitting there all pissy... apparently she is having problem with her boyfriend again... this is... there was a reason why I moved away two years ago.. and that was to get away from the screwed family members that I have here.... I was wrong to think that after two years they would have grown up a little... so I'm back in the middle of the **** storm again... life sucks.
To top it off.. I have no clue how Jamie is doing in China... I hope she is well... I miss her and think about her probably way too much...
Back to the M6... I feel bad that I haven't posted any pictures of the car since I picked her up two weeks ago... I will have to do that as soon as I can... I was thinking about tinting the front turning indicator and the rear light cluster also... I think that would look nice... hmmm... well I guess thats enough rambling for today...

I finally got the windows tinted today... wanted to get the platinum tint but apparently this place didn't have it... I got there and they said it was going to be $175... gave them the key and walked away... got a phone call about 5 minutes later saying that the price had gone up to $260 because they can't use the normal film due to the fact that my radio ant is embedded in the rear glass... the normal metallic based film would cause the radio reception to be bad... so they used this "ceramic" based film... hmm.. anyway, hope it works... but other than that the car looks awesome!!! I really want to post some pictures on here but have been having some computer issues... I will as soon as I can...
What is this world coming to... Cyclone in Burma... Tornados in the midwest... Volcano in Chile... Fire in Florida and Earthquake in China... man.. Jamie is in China right now too.. I hope nothing happened to her... I'm seriously worried about her but there is nothing I can do... I just hate that feeling.
Anyway... once again I allow the day to slip by without going to the gym or getting in the pool... I must be strong and force myself tomorrow...

got the car back on April 30th... its a dream come true... what a beautiful machine... I was able to get my old tag on the car too which is really cool because it has my initials on it...
Met a girl name Jamie... we're been out several times... nice girl... she is currently away to China for two weeks... can't wait for her to get back.. I just really want to see how far this can go... but that doesn't mean I don't have any feelers out there.... I'm open to anything new.
Getting the car window tinted tomorrow... I wanted the Platinum tint but these people don't have any... but they're real good so I'll just settle for the normal charcoal color.
Been thinking about the RPI scoop also... might have to do that one.
Been thinking about Danielle too... Hope she is doing ok... I still think about her a lot... not going to lie.. I miss her.
Oh... the official name of the M6 is Lauren...

Revision to Metra Wiring Harness for Pre-2002 Vehicles

It has been brought to my attention that I indicated the incorrect part number for older, round pin style radio harnesses:

_*The correct number is Metra 71-8590. *_

The number I listed (7_*0*_-8590/1) will provide RCA outputs from the wiring harness, which in our case is only helpful if you put in a new head unit.

Sorry!

P0491 Secondary Air Pump Question

Hi all,
I have the infamous code P0491, and have been troubleshooting the secondary air pump system on my 02 M5. Took the cover off and verified the pump is working at startup. In fact it would not stop on its own. I unplugged the connector (while running), then plugged it back in and the pump stopped running. Is this normal? I thought the pump was supposed to stop after about 15 seconds on its own. Could this be a problem in the valve? Any help would be appreciated but otherwise the car runs great!

Thanks,

Bob in Austin

I am seriously thinking of ordering a 2009 BMW 535xi. I have read conflicting info about the series "7 year itch" series makeover. Is the end of the current series run in 08 and the new series/style begins in 09?

When will the 09 be available to order? Thanks!

Hello everyone. I currently own a 2002 M5 in Lemans Blue which I bought NEW in Huntsville, Alabama. I've read posts on the board many times but have never posted. My car recently rolled 85,000 miles and she tripped the SES light. I scanned and got the P0128 code (thermostat stuck open most likely). I perform all my own maintenance (turbine supervisor by trade) and would like to collect a list of mail order websites in which to purchase quality parts at a lower price than my local BMW dealer which is an hour drive. Should I buy the thermostat & seals from the dealer or can I get an aftermarket possibly at a lower cost (where?) Is there a performance oriented aftermarket thermostat (possibly lower temperature)? => working towards performance upgrades ..... I've viewed RealOEM.com drawings and prices. Any others? The dealer wanted $137 for thermostat (#8) & $62 for seal (#7) plus shipping. The O-rings (#9 & #18) were reasonable. In advance, thanks for your feedback.
PS. - It may be a good idea to post a list of all the cheapest places to buy good parts on the E39 M5 FAQ post (which by the way is a great post). Track and post records show we all seem to have the same problems...thermostat, rear sway bar brakcets, etc......This would save lots of time searching for the cheapest price on a part and maybe encourage certain part suppliers to lower prices to be the cheapest just to make the E39 M5 FAQ list. Thanks

I have had my M6 for about 1.5 months now and have not spent too much time with the option settings..confused about M Mode settings...I have my settings in M mode as follows..D5, MDM, P500s, etc...when in this mode all the bars in display for gearshifts (the volume control looking thing) under the shifter light up...if I engage the SMG in M mode, meaning I downshift using the padles, the bars drop down to the third bar...can't understand...because then I can manually increase bar settings...is there a way of keeping the bar settings at highest shifts once in M mode selected irregardless of D5 or SMG being engaged? And correct me if I'm wrong. I believe that these bar settings are how fast the car shifts gears.

I have been experiencing a vibration when I reach and maintain 76 mph. I have replaced all 4 tires twice within a 1000 miles thinking that it was causing the vibration. I was told that it could be a gromet on the driveshaft. If the last is true then I would have to replace the entire driveshaft.

I am a new member and I was wondering if I could get some help with this problem :1zhelp:

A 2002 Z8 I am inspecting has water in the oil after being in a flodded intersection.
I believe water came into the 2 air inlets since they are very low behind and lower than the radiator. Has this happened to anyone else and just how many inches are the air intakes from the ground?

So I was driving along on the Belt Pkwy today, after exiting the BQE for those who know the roads. The Belt is a nice road that is wide open, and there happened to be no cars in front of me really, so I opened her up and got to about 140, there is a cop spot that comes up after a curve, so I started to gear down and hit the brakes a bit. but I was still doing about 90 after the curve when I spotted the cop. There was only one other car on the road, a minivan about 600ft in front of me and the cop was about 1000ft in front of him. I started to slow down pretty hard until I was doing 50 which is the speed limit. I saw the cops brake lights go on so I knew he was getting the car into gear to pull me over and I was screwed, he had me at about 90 in a 50 if I had to guess. He pulls out just in front of me and proceeds to go behind the minivan, now I figure he is just being a dick and letting me think I may have gotten away with speeding and he is going to slow down and get me in a second. Much to my disbelief however he puts his lights on and signals for the minivan to pull over!:applause:. I can only guess that he had already put his radar detector away and was not paying attention to the road by time I came around the curve. Needless to say I am in a great mood because I certainly do not need a ticket for 40 over on a wednesday morning. Just thought I'd share. Drive safe everyone.

This has been an slowly ongoing project since october 2004, It all started with a less them perfect gearbox and a less then perfect engine. Neither with any major flaws but still. So the car went to a mechanic for fixing the gearbox and have a look on the uneavan idle of the engine. From this point everything got out of hand....

The gearbox was taken out of the car for renovation...wich took 30 months.

During this time the engine problem was located as beeing the so called nikasil issue, Two of the cylinders had poors in the lining wich lead to decresed compression. After a long time of research I finally found a guy who could rebore the cylinders and fodder them with extra thin steel fodders(so its still 4.6 liter). So in january 2006 the engine was shipped to this mechanic, got it back september 2007 ;) It hasnīt been tested yet but hopefully it will run well. Besides fixing the faults some work has been done to the top, also every moving part has been balanced and weight adjusted. (no this is not done by Alpina when building the engine) Cyliderhead gaskets from the E39 M5 since the company from whom I ordered 3,5 mm MLS gaskets failed to hold promised deliverytime (they promised 3-4 weeks, I gave up after 22 weeks...American punctuality ha ha) This is not optimal regarding to the compressor, but it will work. And finally a new clutch when things where apart anyway.

Unfortunatly the car has been standing outside for 3 whole years during this time so things has started to grow on it, its a wreck. Wondering how the brand new suspension from ACS that had been on for 500km has been holding up. On the good side there are no leeks so its dry inside ;)

Its promised to be ready in 10 days for a trial run. Then its directly off to another company for mounting a compressor since the engine now has steel fodders overloading is not a problem. I belive the biggest problem will be finding somewhere to put it. It will have a extra electronic unit so that I will be able to switch between different maps and fuels (98 and E85). Intercooler different fuelpump and so on will be according to the planned 600hp engine.

Naturally the car needs a new paintjob, still havenīt decided on the color yet but one thing is certain it wonīt be cosmosswartz. Perhaps carbon or some Porsche color that has black base and blue perl. Still open for suggestions;) The painting will be done at the same company that mounts the compressor.

Also a new interior is on the agenda, Iīm leaning towards the vader chairs from the M3 E36, naturally reupholstered in Alpina cloth/alcantara and also alcantara on the roof.

Adding Amp to DSP FAQ

I've had a number of questions regarding adding an amplifier to DSP systems - hopefully this FAQ will cover most questions you may have. This is a continuation of http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/blog.php?u=25709&blogcategoryid=-1

Q. Why shouldn't I just add a Cleansweep?
Q. What are the advantages of aftermarket amplifiers over stock DSP?
Q. How much power do I need?
Q. What do I need to consider when selecting an amplifier?
Q. What are "balanced outputs"?
Q. What does "5V pre-out" mean?
Q. What type of amplifier did you install?
Q. Can I just add a subwoofer to the existing system?
Q. I can't find the right connectors / wire. Where did you get your materials?
Q. What type of tools did you need?
Q. Which wires are which?

*Q. Why shouldn't I just add a Cleansweep?*

*A.* Cost and sound quality. Cleansweeps cost about $400. That is the price of a high quality amplifier!

Sound quality is not optimized if you simply install a Cleansweep instead of replacing the factory amplifier. The Cleansweep itself is just fine, but the signal provided by the DSP amplifier is not. The DSP amplifier includes some amount of signal manipulation over and above whatever changes you may make in the equalizer. As a consequence, the sound you hear is actually not a very good representation of the recording you are playing. So now, in addition to the Cleansweep you also need to add a graphic equalizer and pay someone to flatten the bumps out for you.

The signal provided directly from the radio, by contrast, is nearly flat across the 20Hz-20Khz audio spectrum. It is much easier to adjust a flat signal with the bass / treble controls than it is to adjust one that looks like a rollercoaster.

*Q. What are the advantages of aftermarket amplifiers over stock DSP?
*
*A.* Sound quality and volume. See the above answer for more on sound quality. Volume is the second reason people add aftermarket amplification. The stock amplifier is about 20 watts per channel maximum. If that were an RMS number there would be no reason to upgrade. The likely RMS number is closer to 5-8 watts, however, and that simply isn't loud enough for many people. Having said that, the exhaust note is pretty sweet, so you may not need a stereo at all!!!

*Q. How much power do I need?
*
*A. *This is a tough question since there are many variables. The efficiency of your speakers is a prime consideration. Having said that I have MB Quart Discus Series Components (DUA213 - 5.25" w/ 1 tweeter) with a sensitivity of 90db/1m. This is a little above average, but well above the present Q series @ 84db/1m. Even at 12V (about 25W / channel) the radio goes loud enough that I simply can't stand it. Bearing in mind that I'm a bit hard of hearing from working in a manufacturing facility that translates to "It is really damn loud!"

In a previous vehicle I had a 4x50W amplifier w/ 5.25" separates and 2-way 6x9's. That amp would shake the mirror and was also pretty darn loud.

Only you can decide how loud you want your music, but I personally believe that anything over 50W / channel is overkill. Remember, you'll want to apply a 100Hz highpass filter anyway since 5.25" speakers just can't handle the bass.

*Q. What do I need to consider when selecting an amplifier?
*
A. The amplifier you select needs to accept balanced inputs, a 5-6V signal, and if you want it in the stock location it needs to be no larger than 9"x13"x2.5". If you assume 1" top and bottom for connections you are left with 9"x11"x2.5". The amp I installed was 9"x11"x2". It is tight.

*Q. What are "balanced inputs"?
*
*A.* Balanced inputs are a high end method of reducing noise interference in interconnects.

A typical RCA cable carries signal on the positive lead (the tip) and uses the negative lead (the ring) as a reference ground. Any noise that is introduced into the signal is amplified and passed on to the speakers. A 3V signal that picks up 1V of noise would now be a 4V signal to the amplifier.

Balanced RCA's such as we have carry the signal on the tip and the inverse of the signal on the ring. The amplifier then receives these 2 signals and takes the difference between them to get the audio signal. That same 3V signal would be carried on the tip and a -3V signal would be carried on the ring (6V difference). If we introduce 1V of noise the signals would become 4V tip and -2V ring - still a 6V difference since the interference cancels itself out!

NOT ALL AMPLIFIERS CAN ACCEPT BALANCED RCA'S. Using one may damage the amp as well as your radio.

*Q. What does "5V pre-out" mean?
*
*A. *The 5V pre-out is the maximum level of signal that the radio will send the amplifier. The amplifier you choose needs to be able to accept up to a 5V signal on the balanced RCA inputs.
Alternatively, you could use line output converters to reduce the signal voltage to something lower if you amp only handles up to 1V, for example.

* Q. What type of amplifier did you install?
*
*A.* I bought a pair of older MTX amplifiers: a Blue Thunder Pro504 and Pro3002. The one you see in the pics is the 504 as I have not yet installed my subwoofers.

MTX has always been known for making high quality amplifiers, and the Blue Thunder is their former top of the line amplifier. The 504 is rated at 25Wx4ch at 4ohm 12V, but jumps to 65Wx4ch at 4ohm 14.4V.

The present TA line of MTX products will also accept balanced RCA's as well as a 5V signal and are typically outperform their rated power. The TA3404 would be another excellent choice for our vehicles.

*Q. Can I just add a subwoofer to the existing system?

A.* Absolutely. If you are happy with the existing sound then you could simply tap into the appropriate wires in the DSP output harness and add a subwoofer for more punch. In fact, our board sponsors
Bavarian Soundwerks (http://www.BavarianSoundwerks.com/) offers off the shelf kits that will connect into your factory system.

*Q. Where did you get your wire / connectors / materials?

A.* All of my supplies came from <url=http: www.knukonceptz.com="">KnuKonceptz (http://www.KnuKonceptz.com/)</url=http:>. They sell terrific products and have a wide variety of items available, including some not listed on their website (such as different size spade terminals). I especially like they fused distribution blocks which use Kompression fittings instead of a simple setscrew to hold the wire in place.

Q. What type of tools did you need?

A. *Typical mechanics tools with a few exceptions:
8, 10, 13 mm Sockets (Metric)
8 & 10mm Open End Wrenches (Metric)
Phillips & Flathead screwdrivers
Digital Multimeter (optional)
Pliers
Razor
Soldering Iron (optional)
Bench Vise (to shape amplifier & c/o mounting brackets)
Tin Snips (to cut amplifier & c/o mounting brackets)

*Q. Which wires are which?

A. *Luckily BMW is very intelligent when it comes to their wiring scheme. Here is how it works:

_*Speaker Wiring:
*_
All wires can be found in either the 26 pin (all exc. rear mid-bass) or the 15 pin (rear mid-bass and subwoofer) connectors.

White = Amplifier Turn-on lead
Yellow Wire = Driver/Left side of car (this could be passenger for RHD vehicles)
Blue Wire = Passenger/Right side of vehicle

Red Stripe = Front Mid-Bass +
White Stripe = Front Midrange +
Green Stripe = Front Tweeter +
Brown Stripe = Common Ground Front
Purple Stripe = Rear Mid-Bass +
Black Stripe = Rear Tweeter +
Gray Stripe = Common Ground Rear

The wires all come in twisted pairs, so you will always find either a gray stripe or a brown stripe wire in the pair.
A typical pair:
Yellow w/ Red, Yellow w/ Brown = Left Front Mid-Bass + / -
Blue w/ Red, Blue w/ Brown = Right Front Mid-Bass + / -

I am not intending on using the stock subwoofer wiring since it is too small, but it does follow at least the yellow / blue nomenclature...

Please note that while there are power wires and ground to the DSP amplifier present they are not sufficient for anything but the smallest of amplifiers(10W per channel or less).

Bench Vise (to shape amplifier & c/o mounting brackets)
Tin Snips (to cut amplifier & c/o mounting brackets)

Q. Which wires are which?

A. Luckily BMW is very intelligent when it comes to their wiring scheme. Here is how it works:

Speaker Wiring:

All wires can be found in either the 26 pin (all exc. rear mid-bass) or the 15 pin (rear mid-bass and subwoofer) connectors.

White = Amplifier Turn-on lead
Yellow Wire = Driver/Left side of car (this could be passenger for RHD vehicles)
Blue Wire = Passenger/Right side of vehicle

Red Stripe = Front Mid-Bass +
White Stripe = Front Midrange +
Green Stripe = Front Tweeter +
Brown Stripe = Common Ground Front
Purple Stripe = Rear Mid-Bass +
Black Stripe = Rear Tweeter +
Gray Stripe = Common Ground Rear

The wires all come in twisted pairs, so you will always find either a gray stripe or a brown stripe wire in the pair.
A typical pair:
Yellow w/ Red, Yellow w/ Brown = Left Front Mid-Bass + / -
Blue w/ Red, Blue w/ Brown = Right Front Mid-Bass + / -

I am not intending on using the stock subwoofer wiring since it is too small, but it does follow at least the yellow / blue nomenclature...

Please note that while there are power wires and ground to the DSP amplifier present they are not sufficient for anything but the smallest of amplifiers(10W per channel or less).

4 Channel Amp Final Installation Pics

Couple requests for more pics, so here they are. This is a continuation of http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/blog.php?u=25709&blogcategoryid=-1

First is a picture of the final installation itself. As you can see, I left the wires a bit long. Next time I'd shorten them all up about 6 inches. No big deal since they tuck down in nicely.
Attachment 21 (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=21)

Second picture is the distribution block. All of my installation supplies came from a company called KnuKonceptz (http:\\www.knukonceptz.com (http://www.knukonceptz.com)). Despite the goofy name the products are top notch. I was specifically interested in have twisted pair speaker wiring. They have it, and it is good. Each strand is individually tinned, there is a ton of copper in each lead (I used 16 ga), and the jackets are very very flexible. There is almost no chance of a jacket getting cut accidentally on a sharp edge, although that does make them hard to strip. They also provided very high quality spade terminals in all sizes as well (hard to find an 8 gauge wire spade with an 8 gauge lug believe it or not). You can see the modified battery cover to allow the 4 gauge distribution wire to leave the battery area.
Attachment 22 (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=22)

Lastly here is a closeup of the terminals I used to connect to the factory wiring. I used 6 pin connectors for the fronts (hi / mid / lo) and 4 pin for the back (hi / lo). I used 6 for the front in case I decide to build my own crossovers and use the stock mids. The connectors are basic power connectors from radio shack and cost about $1.99 each. The advantage is that I can disconnect them and remove the equipment without unscrewing any other connections. Also note that the left side is all male and right side is all female to dummy proof the connections - need to protect me from myself sometimes :)
Attachment 23 (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=23)

If anyone wants any other pics just post a comment and I'll do what I can.

I'll also be adding a FAQ to try to cover questions various folks have asked me since our stereo is a bit unusual...

Adding Amps to DSP WITHOUT Cleansweeps - Results!

Well, I finally completed the final electrical connection for the 1st amplifier, and everything is working great.

I should note that there is very slight alternator whine. Noticeable only at idle with the windows up and the radio off only, I will try to cure it by grounding the radio at the same point as the alternator (at the moment it uses the stock location) or perhaps by a ground loop isolator at a later date. It is so minimal that I'm just not worried about it.

The other point that I should make is that 5.25" speakers are simply anemic when it comes to bass. They do a decent job, but as expected I had to turn on a 100Hz highpass crossover to keep the MB Quart components from having a fit. The next planned step was the installation of a sub amp (also MTX) as well as 1-2 subwoofers. I thought it might be optional, but it won't be.

As for other results, i can confirm my previous observation that the head unit provides a 5V signal and is balanced. While I turned the gains up ever so slightly, they are basically at minimum. I'll set them for real with a digital multimeter at a later date - for now the amp is driven to clipping at some point louder than I can stand.

Oh, I can also confirm that pushing the cruise control + and - buttons will absolutely *not* change the volume of the radio no matter how hard you try ouich

More pics of the finished installation to come...

Gustav, this is great! Now I have my own personal M5 blog to rant and rave about my car!

Mods I love: K&N intakes, for the sound AND power; Dinan FRC and rear sway bar, best bang for the buck mod in my opinion if you value handling over boosting the power of this already 500hp beast.

Mods I'm so-so about_: Evosport pulley kit, I know it increases the power based on side-by-side videos from Darren_Dallas, but I rarely get to drive fast enough to really feel the gains too.

I haven't done much else other than some appearance things. Even the Umnitza version 1 bulbs were fine IMO, but I know with version 2 or 3 they have plug and play wiring harnesses now so go for it! Changing over to silver bulbs was a nice thing too, even if you just change the side-marker bulbs which are the most glaring orange ones in white lenses.
