Whydid not USA pay the debt toUN until today?

I read that today it was decided under 10 minutes that USA paid her debt to the UN. I recall that the founder of CNN Ted Turner helped to pay a part of the sum last year. This have been a debate over years that have froze the relationship between the USA and UN.

So my question is, why didn't USA pay as agreed earlier?

from the USA's standpoint the problem is that other member nations arent paying their bills- and whats extra is that many owe millions of dollars in unpaid parking tickets to NYC. So the USA attitude was- if youre not going to pay your way- we wont either.

There are a lot of other nations that do pay the bills to UN.

What have NYC parketing tickets to do with this?

In reality it has nothing to do with what other countries do or unpaid parking tickets it is purely to ensure the US gets full support for the anti-terrorist alliance from other UN members. In the same way the embargo was lifted against India and Pakistan to thank them for their support. In reality politics, economics and finance will play as big a role against the terrorists as any military actions.

the USA started grumbling that it pays larger than its fair share of the UN bill (its something like 30% of the total cost each year) a few years ago. other countries dont pay their bills. so the USA decided why should they. To add insult to injury- many UN members leave their cars parked all over NYC- causing traffic and using up spots that are not designated for parking. In the process, they have run up collectively hundreds of millions of dollars in parking tickets. They are not obligated to pay these due to diplomatic immunity but it is good form to pay them. Its kind of like rubbing someone's nose in it. So this all bothered the legislators who were against foreign aid from the start. they look at it like these other nations are not greatful for the assistence.

my personal view is we should pay the bill and then criticize others- not monkey see, monkey do.

Re: Whydid not USA pay the debt toUN until today?

For what it is worth my opinion is that the UN is NOT doing it's intended job.
It has turned a blind eye to too many situations for political reasons, for too many years (remember Rwanda and Jugoslavia)
It is a worthless organization for too many reasons for me to go into detail.
As it is now it should be disbanded and a new one created.
And all those eventually found to be guilty of crimes, including Benan Savan , Kofi Annan etc ought to be jailed for life.
Period.
Somalia on the human rights commision, for God's sake lets be serious for once!!

We have a lot to thank US for "over here", but lately - I'am not so sure I like it....
reminds me of the days living in the shadow of USSR....

Re: Whydid not USA pay the debt toUN until today?

US was among the countries started it and the world should live by it. League of Nations did not work, so now UN wont work. Why start a third one http://www.m5board.com/ubb/confused.gif Follow UN recommendations and it will be a better world.

Thats somewhat ambigious and misleading. What is to say the UN makes the right decisions?

NATO works pretty well, in my opinion. The UN is a hemogeny, which is a problem.

UN consists of more nations. Nato is only some nations.

Re: Whydid not USA pay the debt toUN until today?

The problem with the UN is it is all talk, no action. Lots of finger pointing and threats, but little else.

And why should the US foot such a large percentage of the bill?
