VW Passat W8

Hi

How do you guys like the knew VW Passat W8? I know its 286Hp W8 is not a comparison to the 400HP BMW M5 V8 but it's quite cheap compared to other high performance sedans!

Has anybody tried it yet?

Regards Stefan

According to the test in the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport it was slow and consumed a lot of petrol. Here are the numbers.

Leistung
202 kW (275 PS)

Beschleunigung 0-100 km/h
8,3 s

Elastizität k.A.
Höchstgeschwindigkeit
250 km/h

Testverbrauch
14,8 L/100 km

Bremsweg (kalt/warm)
35,4 m/ 39,4 m

Grundpreis
82.976,- DM

That's really slow. My 170HP 523 with 5 Speed manual goes 0-100 in 8,6s. So with 105hp more the Passat is only 0,3s faster

So I guess if I meet one at the light I'll try to race it and I'll have a good chance at least to keep up with it

So as I said the "Grundpreis" of 82.976,- DM is not really high compared to what you get: W8-Power, Leather interior and other technical stuff.
I mean my 523 costed about 88.000,- DM in '98 with some extras of course but still it's without leather trim and has "only" a 6-cyl I think that if you want to have the same amount of engine power and luxury stuff(I don't mean, buying them as extras but included in the base price) you will have to go for a 540i which surely is 100.000,- Dm and more!

Regards Stefan

And also if you're talking abot the 5-series pricing you can really get high ones when you get all of the options. F.e 520i - the at least powerful petrol car of 5 series has a basic price a shave over 50.000 Dm , and you can pay over 100.000 Dm if you'll take ALL of the extras. Also i'll probably be visting stuttgart , so maybe a little meet? Check your Pm box , bmw 523.

I wonder if there is a market for a high power, high spec Passat? I mean, Ford have tried with their Scorpio, Opel with their Senator and 3.0 Omegas, Audi with their A8, Nissan with their Maxima... the only reason I would think this W8 Passat could be considered a success is the image upgrade for the base model VWs.

Performance doesnt seem too great for the Passat W8, especially for a 280bhp car, but VW probably considers the increased driveability to be key, eg torque and pulling power through the gears instead of outright acceleration or topspeed.

The only good thing about this car to me is the interesting transplant projects that spring to mind...Golf W8 anyone???
