M6 versus a Vauxhall Vectra

I was reading my club magazine, and in there, some misguided individual has stated that the Vauxhall (Opal) Vectra 2.5/6 GSI is a faster accelerating car than the M6, and rides better as well.
Now I have not been in an M6, but the Vectra, although quick, is rock hard on the ride. So I doubt his claims are valid.
What are your comments.
Anybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What ????

There is no possible comparation betweem those two cars. They are soooo different...The M6 has a huge presence, one of the most beatifull bimmers ever built (just my opinion). It has the fantastic M5 engine on it... My father says it is much more fun to drive than the M5 E34...

I canīt find the numbers but if Iīm not wrong it was 286 bhp and about 245 lb/ft torque. Donīt think that a little 2.5 v6 engine can be better a performer.

Hi guys

WELL I DOUBT that a 170hp Vectra wil have the slightest chance to keep up with that gorgeous M6 Bimmer

Also let me see your front wheel drive , mr. softy suspension and 15 wheels (maybe optional 16") with some cool tyres that are probably 195/65 or something like that on any twisted road and you'll just diseapear in the rear view mirror , fall of the road or maybe even roll through your roof , i don't wish you the last 2. And at the lights i could rev maybe up to 4.500 rpm and then shift to the next gear and still have you well behind , and when i'll do the fast launch it would look like a bicycle versus a jet-plane so don't even try to tell me anything , but your vectra probably has some advantages , actually two , one is price and the second is mpg , but if you cared about the mpg you won't be a car enthusiast and join this board , for the price of the new vectra you could buy an E34 M5. So the vectra is just the wrong choice , the 6 is an old car but still offers better ride then any of your opel/vauxhall cars. There are two opel cars that are actually worth mentioning one isn't actually an opel , it just has it's base (lotus omega , yeah baby!!! ) and the other one is opel gt concept back from the 60's , the new speedster isn't good. Opel may manufacture nice cars , but not for enthusiasts , that's the point , they are not interrested in making sport cars , and that's why they 've chosen the wrong way. As Ferry Porsche said: " The first car is a sports car , just as lthe last one will be" and you can't tell that this isn't true. The only one real sport car that opel has ever made is the calibra turbo 4x4 6-speed , this was a nice car , with super good aerodynamics.
P.S I wrote the first part in first person but unfortunatelly i don't have a M6 , but i have driven some of them and that's why i can say what i said.Oh yeah , and Stefan the vectra gsi has 195 horses but it won't help her anyway.

Thanks I did not know that! I thought that the standard 2,5l V6 was the fastest Vectra you can get! But as you said it's not enought to keep up with M6

First, the M88/3 engine (286bhp) has about 90bhp more power than the 2.5 V6 from Opel

Second, the M88/3 engine has a lot more torque (340nm) than the Opel V6 engine(max 250nm). Besides the Opel V6 needs more revs to reach it's highest torque level and it also cannot be revved as high as the M88/3 engine.

Third, The grip the E24 ///M635CSI and the E28 ///M5 have with their rear wheel drive is much better than the Vectra's front wheel drive.

Fourth, The E24 ///M635CSI weighs 1495kg and the E28 ///M5 only 1430kg. A Vectra Sport 2.5 V6 with some options would weigh also about 1400kg.

Fifth, even with the catalyst S38B35 engine (260bhp, 330nm), the Vectra would not have a chance.

I'd say, Keep on dreaming Vectra.

With best regards,

Raymond

Hi Carl,

He He, You got me.

The truth is, I have owned some of the more sportive Opels, but have mixed feelings about them. They where good cars, but where not build to last. Besides the last Opel I owned, a 1992 Astra GSI 16V had severe problems with rust in 1997 and 1998.

I got tired of Opel and in april 1999, I bought my current E34 ///M5. Now after allmost three years of BMW ///M's, there is no way back

In the mean time my wife brought in a heritage of hers, her Opel Corsa from 1995. It's a nice car, perfect for city and winter use. And Believe me, there is no better car to abuse when cold as repairs are very cheap.

You can allmost say that I do everything to break that car just to find some new arguments to replace it with a nice BMW which she can also use.

But last week after reading the latest BMW car magazine, I tried to prepare my wife for project III. That would be an E12 B7S turbo or an E34 B10 biturbo. Her response was obvious: " You allready have enough cars, you don't get one more?". It looks that I have to be more carefull with that Corsa.

Take care,

Raymond

I have used that on my wife many times and it works

I had the use of a Vectra 2.5 GSI when my M3 was in the shop (it was a courtesy car??), and although it was a nice car to drive (and a bit of a novelty) it was still rather slower than expected and had a very hard ride.

So I am glad you agree that 'the guy giving this statement was very much misguided'.
Perhaps when he drove the M6, he didn't realise that it had 5 gears and had inadvertantly left it it 3rd from the beginning!
