Report: The Geneva 2004 premiere of the Koenigsegg CC-R

The Geneva Salon 2004 Premiere of the CC-R

"It's the fastest car we've ever tested"
"It is my favourite supercar! You just want more and more."

The sentences comes from British national Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear from 2003. A man that is quite selective when it comes to cars outside the British Isles, yes we BMW M enthusiasts have noted that. It was fast. Very fast. Faster than the previous leader, the Pagani Zonda S, with it's AMG-powered V-12.
So where in Modena, Italy is this supercar made? Near Pagani's factory? Around the Bugatti EB110 / EB110SS facilities? Close to where the Cizeta V16 was built?
No. In Sweden. Where Saab and Volvos once were built. This sounds like music to your ears, especially when you come from Sweden where manufacturing of fun cars is a rarity. Fun and fast supercars is VERY rare as well. Say "Hej" to the Koenigsegg CCR!
At Geneva Koenigsegg launched an R-version of the first Koenigsegg, the CC8S. The Koenigsegg CCR has all the features of the CC8S but a refined design of the side air-intakes, different headlight arrangement, a revised rear-design, larger brakes as well as new front splitters. Most importantly it have a much more powerful engine that produces 806 HP compared with the 655 HP of the standard model. Torque is up from 750 Nm to 920 Nm and it has a dry weight of 1180 kg.
A quote from the official brochure: 0-135 mph (217 km/h) in 10 s flat. 0-100 km/h in 3,2 s. Top speed 395+ km/h (242 mph). Quarter mile: 9 s, trap speed 235 km/h (146 mph). Braking 100-0 km/h 31 m. It's height of only 1,07 m reduces the frontal area and helps the Koenigsegg attain a remarkable top-speed.

The weight of the chassi module is only 62 kg thanks to the use of 21 layers of carbon fibre and the torsional stiffness is 28 100 Nm/degree. Compare this to the stiffness of a Porsche 996 Turbo Convertible with 11 600 Nm/degree. Notice that the Koenigsegg also is in part a convertible with a retractable hardtop. For reference the Porsche 911 Turbo has a torsional stiffnes of 27 000 Nm/degree and that is not a convertible. This offers excellent safety to the driver and passsenger, as seen in accidents during Formula One. Furthermore, the rigidity is also very important for the handling of the car.
Four fuel tanks are placed so that two are on each side of the car for optimum balance at all times. Parking sensors (PDC) are optional (It's true!).

The engine is a 4,7 liter V8 supercharged by a Lysholm-type compressor and weighs 215 kg. The boost-pressure is 1,2 bars and redlines at 7600 rpm. The exhaust system is on titanium on the CCR version and stainless steel on the CC8S. Notice the rearwindow with integrated third brake-light.

The small air-intake in the front is for cooling the brakes, while the rear system is supplied with air through vents under the car. Most of todays mid-engined supercars have huge air-intakes and outlets at the front of the car, making them nervous at high speeds. The Koenigsegg has it's aerydynamic pressure point behind the mass centre of the car, makes it more stable the faster it's driven. The xenon-headlamps have a slightly different design on the CCR than on the CC8S.

The front and rear brakes are 6-piston calipers developed especially for Koenigsegg by AP-Racing 362 mm diameter ABS-assisted. The CC8S has 4-caliper brakes in the rear. "The ABS-system is very much on the sporty side. It locks with some slip through the whole process making it very efficient. For a supercar I think it is a correct strategy not to make the ABS too intrusive yet still allow the driver braking control instead of letting the ABS take over too early." according to test-driver Loris Bicocchi. Koenigsgg has chosen to go against the currently trend with ceramic or ceramic-composite discs. Such materials are new and exciting, but has as of yet not proven neither as reliable nor as subtle as using steel alloy for brake discs.

The wheels ar emade of magnesium. Notice the rear lower diffusors, similar tecnique on the E60 M5. The wheels are Michelin Pilot Sport that can withstand speeds to exceeding 400 km/h. 20' wheels in back and 19' wheels for front of the CCR.

Beautiful interiour tailored in Alcantara, leather and carbon. Notice how close the gearshifter is to the wheel. I may look awkward but it is the best possible position for a shifter: as close to the steeringwheel as possible for minimum traveltime of the hand. The seat-cushions are made of Nasa-developed Tempur material.

The difference between the man and the boy is the price of the toy...

Moonroof a'la Koenigsegg.

Notice the bmwm5.com decal!

This is the Koenigsegg CC8S on a Swedish winterroad and the upper right is during Gumball 3000 2003 at the start outside the Fairmont Hotel in San Fransisco. Notice the bmwm5.com sticker!
16 cars have been delivered to customers as of March 2004 and Koenigsegg is working hard to until the summer to deliver the 20 more that are ordered.
If it is not evident I was very impressed by this car. The first journalist that will drive the CCR will be Tiff Needell which will be very interesting, since the CC8S was such an success for Koenigsegg with Mr Clarkson behind the wheel.
One thought this autumn is to team up the Koenigsegg with the E60 M5 on the airstrip which is just next to the Koenigsegg factory. I know the M5 will loose but it would just be interesting to see with how much... So I hope we haven't seen the last of Koenigsegg for this year!
