Amusing story.....

The lady i was driving around is not normally the 'dumb-blonde' type, and alright, she doesn't know much about cars but I couldn't stop laughing when she stepped out my car and she happened to glance down along the running board/sills.

She asked me: "Why does your car have a "SW" label down here?..... I thought you said you had a M5..."

I believe SW stands for 'Superschnellsport Wagen".

It was an little known expensive optional extra to get SW badging on the sills ..... together with 'W' style wheels.

They are now very sought after and go for 2 or 3 times the price of the usual badges/wheels. If anybody wants to trade-up their existing ordinary M5 sill badges and M-wheels for these exclusive items I would be happy to do this swap for additional payment of only $1000 !!

Thanks for sharing, made me and my finacee laugh (who is actually really good at spotting the M fakes that pop up and then proceeds to giggle "We've got four exhausts. Ha, count them" or similiar).

that's awesome. At one time a few years ago, there was an Ebay auction for an "SW Keychain" and they even had the M5 keychain upside down in the pic.

The person or service hosting the auction just had no idea what they were putting up for auction.

This is like the story about the person who insisted they had to fill their engine crankcase with "710".

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."
