M5's and M6's all over the dealer

I was in to purchase a part from the dealer here in Houston yesterday. On the showroom floor I was amased at how many M5's and M6's were on the floor. 3 M5s and 2 M6s. Who knows how many they had in the back lot. I can never recall ever seeing more than one M5 E39 being on a showroom floor at a time and it was usually sold waiting for the customer to pick it up back when the E39 M5 were new.

I wonder how the new M5 and M6 are selling now?

Mark

When M5s were introduced in the US, we were just at the peak of a great stock market, and everyone had money to burn. When I ordered mine, I plunked down a deposit in 1999 before BMW even knew what the MSRP was going to be. By late 2000, there were at least 5 of them in the parking lot of the computer company where I worked.

Six years later, there is no way I would spend that kind of money on a new car, though I could, but with 3 kids about to go to college... However, I don't regret having bought my M5 back then, not for a moment, and I hope I drive it for at least another 6 years.

Interesting observation on the stock of M5's and M6's. I seem to be at the dealer all the time, and there is always at least 4 on the lot. I seem to remember when the M6 first landed this summer the sticker prices were identical, now the M5 has lowered by about 16K to the M6. I would guess the dealers aren't asking a premium (i.e. market adjustment). Also a surprising amount of E60's on E-bay these days, maybe BMW has overbuilt, and the prices will drop even more!!!! Also 2007 M5 has the 6-speed manual as an option if you haven't noticed, say goodbye SMG! I'll take 3 pedals anyday!

Damn, I wish that the BMW dealership would have those cars there. They hardly ever have M3's let alone M5 and M6

Same here. For a variety of reasons I've been to San Francisco, Weatherford (Berkeley) and Peter Pan (San Mateo) BMW recently and the story is the same. Weatherford's floor has 2 M5's, 2 M6's (one is a cabrio), an M3, an M-Z4 and only 3 others - a 335i coupe (gorgeous!), a 750 and a 550.

I also think the Z4 coupe is gorgeous.

But I'm like some of the others - can't afford a new one, can't imagine anything in my price range ever even remotely comparing to the M5 I own, so I'm just gonna keep fixing it for the forseeable future. (I was at Weatherford picking up the only e-brake handbrake assembly in the bay area.....)

Boo Weatherford, they markup parts about 100 percent. But I agree, there are many on the floor (and I saw another in that warehouse).

Steve , I think you are right on. There is definitely less disposable income/optimism with the public as a whole. Another thing compounding the low demand, is that the market has become relatively saturated with high performance sedans (Mercedes, Audi, Bentley, Cadillac)... a lot more options than when many of you bought the M5....and let's face it, despite our enthusiasm here on the board, there are actually a relatively small number of buyers with the interest and resources to plunk down 70k-110k for a car.

I visited few dealers looking for an M5, at first glance you see a lot of M5 e39 in stock but 75% of them sadly in very poor condition even 03 with 48K looks worse then mine car that was made in 00 with 75K... sad

it is "spend the bonus on a new toy" season - so not surprised the dealers are putting the flash cars in the showroom - they make great impulse purchases

BMW Seattle -- I was there last weekend purchasing the universal rear seat cover because of my dog... I digress

Anyway -- two E60 M5 on the floor and one M6... the M5s were at MSRP...
