528i to M5
I just purchased a 1998 528i. I would like to turn the exterior into an M5 look. I wanted the 528i engine for the gas mileage. Does anyone have advice on how to do this? Are there packages I can buy? Should I buy the 18" rims and piece things together?
Thanks, Greg |

Boy!! pretty gutsy of coming to a M5 board and ask for this question.
I am surprised no one has attacked you yet Here's what you need to do: go to http://www.bimmer.org/5series/messages/ look for a guy (you can do this by searching their archive) that goes by the handle of "SVTWEB". Eric is his real name. I hope this helps, whatever you do, just don't put an M5 badge on it. beewang

why would you want to do this?
you'll need to replace the wheels, lower the car, change the molding around the car, replace the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, change the sideview mirrors, the rearview mirror, and install 4 tailpipes.. and at the end you end up with a car that drives like a 528.. hummm.. ![]() |

That is called the [b]Identity Crisis[b], why would you want to be someone that you are not? Or in this matter, we are talking about your car.
This is the wrong place for you to get those type of information. Good luck.

Honestly, go back to the dealer and get a M5 - if you've taken anything away from the posts on this board, you'll realize it is truly an amazing expereince.
Besides, you will spend thousands and thousands of dollars to try to make it look like an M5 but underneath you're going to have the performance of a 528i. The many thousands you'll spend won't be able to be recouped on a purchase of a real Beast! Please! Last edited by JimC; 13th August 2001 at 19:01. |

Gsanders,
I think you are VERY brave to post this here. I just sold my 97 E39 528I (Tsilver/grey) . It was a great car, drove beautifully (hey it only has 197hp) . Why would you want to pretend to be a performance sedan ? Eventually you will be goaded into a race & get KILLED, giving the M5’s abilities a bad name. The 528I is a great car. It serves it’s purpose wonderfully . It is a very stylish & comfortable sedan that get’s good great gas mileage. I never once thought of changing the cosmetics of my car. It is a well rounded car, & at 40k it is not exactly cheap. Don’t lessen the prestige & beauty of your BMW by polluting it w/ riceboy aerokits & mock M5 wheels. If you want to tune your E39, then tune it. But don’t imitate the M5. Be proud of your 528i. My .02 josh |

G,
Did you purchase your 528I new ? If so then you spent 40-45k and imho you could have easily ran with the Big Boys for $45k. or was the car a Hand me down/Gift/ etc… . In your response you stated that you are just desperate, FOR WHAT ? A fast car. For 45k you could have had a ton of fast cars used & new…S/C E36 M3’s, S4’s, Z28’s , Cobra Mustangs, and the list goes on….not to mention you could have a heavily modded used car for much cheaper. My 940 flies!, & I only have maybe 4k worth of mods in my old Volvo…. If you want speed, sell your 528I & move away from luxury into the sports car category…it looks like you can’t have both now…unless your like me & buy pre- 95. But maintenance gets spendy. I had a 1989 750il..when the tranny went out I bounced it . NO WAY...V-12 = $$$$$$ Last edited by jsh/AZ; 13th August 2001 at 20:22. |

If you're looking to get a nicer bodystyle (I personally think the front airdam's a little wimpy for such a nice car - 528i), you might check the tuners like Hamann for body updates. If you want new rims, go for aftermarket. At least that way, you're not copying the "ALMIGHTY M5"
and when you do get your beast, you'll be able to switch rim's or sell them.My 2farthings |

I guess the reason why we really don't like the idea of 528s using the M5 kit because when the time comes to protect the reputation, it won't be there.
Others don't know better and would get their heads big, tell everyone about his M5 kill. That's the reason why...... |

Oooooo I'm came in late but did I hear making a 528 look like the ///M5??? Hope not!!!
Adrian, hummm would it really matter if someone raced a 528i that had the M5 badge and thought they actually beat an M5? (I dunno I wouldnt mind that others think the M5 is slow... I mean what we really what is stealth look weak but a real Beast under) I mean in the end that means that person doesnt really know what an M5 is, and when they really do go up against a real M5 they wont know what hit them. then they'll go Errrrr hummmm Ehhhhhh what??? but I smoked an M5 the other day... ![]() |
