Tested acceleration figures for M3 E46?

Hi all!

Last Saturday in our local BMW drag race I was able to enjoy the
new M3 belonging to one of my friends and I took my Race Technology's AP-22 to test its acceleration figure from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph).
The best result we got was 5.45 seconds in the run when I was also sitting as a passenger.
The car is Phoenix Yellow/Black leather with around 2700 km on its clock.
Have other M3 E46 users tested the same acceleration and what results got?

By the way, my E30 336i, has just a bit slower acceleration - 5.50 seconds. I was glad to be so close to this Ultimate Driving Machine!

I'd say that 5.4s 0-100km/h is a good result for a car with only 2700km on the clock. That figure probably equates to 0-60mph in around 5.1s.

My car with 4500 miles (7200km) is noticeably stronger than it was just after its running-in service so I'd expect some improvements in time.

Please tell me what an E30 336i is. Did you type 36 instead of 25 (the latter is exactly one key to the left) or is it an E30 with a 3.6l M5 engine in it? Now that would move ...

Ian.

I had on my M3 3,2 '96 5,6 s with AP22 with wheelspin because of lsost traction and that was caused by the narrow spare rear wheel that was fitted the car.

Its hard to believe that a 4 door E36 M3 would ONLY be 0.55 tenths of a second more than the new E46 M3 in 0-60 WITH him having a wheelspin added onto that. I think that Gustavs readings are correct...well, mabey they are both correct, but i guess the driver of the E46 M3 is not at all good.

Ian."

It was not a mistype () on the keyboard. I really posess a E30 with M5 E34 3.6 liter engine installed. I did it this April and so far I enjoy the outcome ) Just these continuous problems with traction... I am considering installing Racelogic's traction control. What are other's opinions on that one? Is is worth it?

P.S. I attach one photo from that drag race with my E30 standing next to M3 E46 on the start line.

P.P.S. By the way, my E30 currently is for sale - so if anyone is interested, please e-mail me!

Doubled,

Now that must be a beast of a car. Congrats on a truly wacky hybrid.

wow, so your car was measured a 0-62? That would make your car faster than the new E46 M3...now THAT, i find hard to believe, even though your car has 4 doors, and 8 more hp than the current M3...Those results for that E46 M3 must be wrong...something doesn't add up here. Gustav, how much does your car weigh in comparison to the new M3?

Gustav,

Assuming that 338bhp is calculated power (inferred from actual rear-wheel power) then that could easily be a few percent optimistic. Rolling roads can never get the flywheel power exactly right and the accuracy depends very much on the car and the way in which the rolling road attempts to work out transmission losses.

What was the measured power at the rear wheels? Is your car chipped?

Actually I think the time is good, but not very good.

The official 0-100 km/h for the E36 M3 3,2 is 5,5 s and 5,6 dor the Convertible.

I think the weight of the car is 1650 kg.

I had before chipping 308 HP (even thought it should have 321 HP) I think and after 338 HP.

Just wanted to add some info.

0-62mph ( 100km/t) has much to do with traction on this powerfull cars.

I hva seen 4 tests of the new M3 E46 and the results are different even if they have the same driver.

3 tests are made of "Sport Auto" and 1 from a swedish magazine.

0-62 mph 0-125 mph 1/4 mile
M3 Coupe normal gearbox 5,1 sek 18,1 sek
M3 Coupe SMG 5,5 sek 20,5
M3 Convertible normal 5,5 sek 20,5
M3 Coupe normal gear box 5,2 sek ?? 13,34@109 mph

My old M3 3.0 (286 hp) did with 2 persones in the car and pro testing equipment 5,55 on the 0-62 mph run...... and 1/8 at 8,87@82 mph

It seems like the powerspread on this engines are big, I dont know the milage on this cars when tested so that could be an explanation. Correct drive in could also be an important factor.

BTW: the funny thing is that the Convertible got the fastest laptime on Hockenheim (1,17,2) with the same driver and tires size. That was explained by the fact that the M3 Convertible has an more agil setup. It dont have the tendensy to understeer so much. It was 0,5 sec faster than the fastest Coupe !!!

On "www.ls1.com" it is a post from a guy with the "new M Roadster" that claim 12,5 on the 1/4 run... and that is fast.....
