Alcantara Steering Wheel install complete (pics inside)

Got around to installing the wheel I picked up from a forum member last week.

I was pretty surprised, it reall only took about ten minutes, I have a 2000 and it was a direct plug and play, picked up the airbag on ebay.

Some before and after shots for your pleasure.....Note the missing piece of Carbon trim on the left side, that was a tastefull addition to the package from our good friends at Fibre Design....

Edit: The pics were there.......

Here is the photobucket links instead, I wonder if the ones I posted were too big or something....

Day I bought it (from Anton at LA Wheels, great guy)

Yesterday's pic's

Wow that carbon fiber looks awesome. Too bad Fiber Designs is going out of business or at least is acting that way. Glad to see you finally got(most) of your CF kit. I know how long you waited for that!

I noticed you also got the upgraded center console/display...If you don't mind me asking, how much did that set you back (unit+labor)? Where'd you get it as well?

I think I paid around 1600 for the MKIV nav and display. I bought it from a european seller on Ebay, I have his contact information somewhere, but I know several board members have used him as well. I actually used him twice, I managed to drop my nav computer on the ground and needed another one, he rushed it right out and even remembered details about my car from our emails, several months later.

I'll look around for the exact price and pm you the contact information.

I think his name on Ebay is "naviandbmwparts" or something to that affect, I believe his real name is Aurimas Sakys.

Labor was free, just took a couple hours to swap everything out, I am by no means mechanically inclined and I was able to do it without a problem. The only confusing part was finding one of the wires to the nav system on the back of the DSP unit, I didn't know what it looked like or what it was attached too until I stumbled upon a post on here. After that it took less than an hour.

The front display basically just pops out.

I'm pretty pissed right now about the rest of the CF, what I have received looks good, and had they said "it will take three months, but you are paying 1/3 of what AC Schnitzer charges" then I still would be fine with it. But I'm not getting into it quite yet on that one.........

Here is his ebay store, his direct email is sakysa@gmail.com, last time I just emailed what I needed and he replied pretty quickly with pricing etc, shipping was pretty fast considering it came from Europe, I think it took five days.

Pics of 2000 Tach and Speedometer

Your pics are also valuable to those looking for MY 2000 tach and speedometer. Some members have asked about the difference between the MY 2000 black and the MY 2001+ grey guages. The first pic (top) shows MY 2000 guages and steering wheel.

Personally I like the M5 color stiching on the MY 2000 wheel though I have heard the 2001+ wheel has better hand feel. I have driven them both but did not make a conscious note of the difference in the feel of the wheel. They both felt great to me!

the 2001 and > M5 wheel does have the M tricolor stitching. The 330zhp (performance pkg) alcantara wheel does not. You can get an alcantara wheel from the e46 M3 "competition package" with the tricolor stitching, and it's thicker, like the m3/m5 wheel. the 330 wheel is a bit skinnier (i have this as well).

Not sure on the size difference, but the instal took about ten minutes.

Two Torx nuts on the back of the wheel need to come out.

Lift off airbag, unsap harness.

Unbolt steering wheel.

Place new wheel on hub and bolt down.

Place airbag back in, clip in harness' and give it a firm push. It simply clicks into place.
