Feedback on E60 M5 problems?

I was at an "M Meet" last week and had the opportunity to speak with some folks owning the new version of the M5. They told me that the E60 M5 was "full of problems" and "they spent more time in the shop than driving".

Huh?

I have to admit that the tho't of iDrive makes me up-chuck and SMG doesn't tickle my left foot much, but I tho't that BMW with it's (aaahem...) Formula One concept 'stuff' had it together. At least now.

I'm about ready to order a new car when I come off lease with my E39 M5 (which I care for a great deal...) and tho't I'd pop my butt into a new '07 M60 M5 with a 6-speed manual. (yeah, I know those with SMG think it's the cat's meow and such)

But, considering the concerns of some folks have had with the new version of the M5, I'm a bit reserved.

Does this car have more problems than the M39? (of which I've had none, other than some oil consumption, and SES crap which I ignore) I've read several threads regarding E60 problems.... are these just a few folks that are having problems, or are they a bigger deal and more wide spread?

And, why are there so many E60s available at dealers?

Thanx for the help.

BAGGER

I have had 2 E60 M5's now and i have only had 1 problem between the 2 of them and that was the Vanos oil line leak. The problem was fixed in less than a day in the shop and I was given a nice M5 model for my trouble. My E39 '02 M5 spent a total of 1.5 weeks in the shop the 7 months I owned that car.

There seem to be a few problems and not common to every car. However, they do fix the car under warranty and IMO the E60 is far superior to the E39.
I don't know any actual numbers for used E60's, however, maybe one of the reasons is the lack of great gas mileage??? Maybe they were talked into buying the cars at the dealer and had no clue what they were really getting?? Got the old, "you need to have one of these", "very exclusive car", "we have a year waiting list, but we can get you this one now!". just some thoughts.

Good luck!! They are wonderful machines!! I would give the SMG a chance, you won't regret it!

Can't speak for anyone else but I've not had any problems in 6600 miles. If the E60 M5 is "full of problems" you can't prove it by me.

Don't know why I Drive causes you so much concern, it's a simple system which works flawlessly for anyone who has any technical ability. When you use the voice feature it's even simpler and mine works very well.

Regarding SMG III. I was one of those who was going to wait for the manual but decided to take a chance. After getting used to it there is no way I'd go back to the manual. The SMG is a great transmission and the performance you can get from it would be impossible to duplicate with a manual. In my view it would be foolish to buy the six speed manual.

Having said that I hope to find someone that does go that way so that I can run circles around him.

Bill

P.S. I had two E39 M5s and an M3. While they were great cars they pale in comparison to the E60 M5.

Every car has their problems, but the E60 M5 is certainly not a "POS".

at 8800 miles and 8 months, my car has been to the shop over 5 times now. but the car is unlike any other.

most people who dont like i-drive from what i have heard never really used it much. just never gave it a chance. i cant go back to a crappy radio player and nav screen. the widescreen allows you to fit so much information.

ditto on the SMGIII. love it and will never get stick again unless it is the only option. stick shift is a thing of the past.

Sorry to rain on your day but I just posted "most rediculous tranny fix yet".
But even tho I am facing a possible major fix on my car, I still love it. It's awesome!!

I've got almost 8700 miles on the clock now since December. My car's only had two overnighter's at the dealer (one really since one of them was the 1200 mile service when they also replaced my VANOS line, which did not break on me). The other was the SZL sensor and couple other small items: lifting shadow trim on the passenger door and loose rubber trim on the rear window. No problems other than that.

I've got 13,400 miles on the car. Get the damn e60 M5. Its awesome. The only time I've been to the dealer was for the vanos oil line fix. I was one of the first to experience it and BMW struggled at first b/c the problem wasn't yet widely known. Since the fix, I haven't been to the dealer yet (12000 since). The e39 M5 was/is great but this car is on another level.

The e39 was no really better about these issues than the e60...remember the premature clutch wear, oil use, etc. Every car has its little list of "stuff" and neither the e39 nor the e60 are any different.
