Strange noise after startup.

After starting the M5, I heard a rattling type noise coming from under the hood. I've had the car since October of 2005, and don't recall this sound before. Upon further investigation, the noise seems to be coming from the right valve train on the engine, near the oil filler. After a minute or two the noise when away. The current oil level reads 0.3 L. I'm waiting for the oil indicator to reach 0.1 before adding a Liter of 10W60 Syn. Any thoughts or known problems please respond.

Thanks,

JDS M5

Me too. Comes and goes. There have been some posts about the vanos being the cause of the clacking noise you hear, which apparently doesn't seem to be serious at all. I just feel that a car that costs 100K+ shouldn't clack - ok, the rough diesely startup... can live with that... but the clacky noise is downright embarrasing.

Can anyone shed some more light on this issue?

Oh contraire, many high performance engines make lots of noises till warm up, pistons, exhaust gasses, clearances ect...Vanos also, money you spend on the vehicle has absolutley nothing to do with how it works..This is an ultra performance , high tech vehicle...Let it warn a few minutes or drive slowlyat low RPM...

I agree with JC, This noise doesn't seem like a normal process. What issues have been out there with the Vanos system?

That has been my experience. I just play the radio loud till it warms then roll down the windows.

I've had the exact same problem

The very first time it happened, it took them a couple of month of back and forth with the PUMA case people and eventually, they gave me a new car. After about 2k miles on the 2nd car, it started doing it again so I took it back to my dealer. This time around--especially after their experienced with my previous car, they were able to fixed it just fine because of what they've learned from my past car. As of yet, the problem has not come back & I now have about 9K miles. As per my SA, they were received a new tool from BMW that allows them to properly bleed the VANOS line. If you're interested to know more, the BMW dealer is in Henderson and Dave Sams is the service manager who handled my case. Hope this helps you out some! Good luck!

Patrick

It makes as much noise and is less cantankerous during warm up than any other 500HP naturally asperated engine I have owned.
