Feedback on creaking sounds?

Not sure if it's the very hot weather we're enjoying in the UK currently (95+ degrees), but i've noticed my car is craking like a very old man.

Can't work out if it's the interior or the exterior but it's fairly noisy & a little annoying. Cranking the Logic7 up does help but surely a £70K motor should not be this creaky or should i just wait for temps to cool down.

Complain to dealer. They will lube your door seals which improved the noise a lot for me-- but did not solve.

In addition to these creaks, I also am developing a few rattles (turn signal stalk; center dash; and glove box). Very annoying. I have complained to dealer about these as well, but fear that attempts to reproduce the sounds wil provide "cover" for extended joy rides.....

Pretty standard with all BMW cars. The dealer will sell you a tube of silicon gel to lube your doorsills. Nothing much else they can do.

TBH it does not sound like the door seals, although given the hot weather it is possible. Don't think it's leather rubbing as it sounds more metallic creaky than leather.

Hi w8pmc,
Try dropping your windows a fraction and see if this stops the creaking. If it does stop, then its not your door seals but the upper most seal, the one that looks like fuzzy felt.I had this on my brand new car.I tried waxing my door shuts first, because i could feel something like a coating on them, which squeaked when i rubbed my fingers along them. This worked for me, taking the creaking away.If you have to lube the felt strip with silicon lube, then do it with a smallish brush, as the felt seems to absorb the lube, so you need quite a bit on there.I also had this on a Focus ST i owned recently, and it drove me bonkers. It took me weeks to figure out what it was, but this did the trick in the end.The creaking on the M5 is exactly the same as the problem with the Focus.Give it a try, and i hope it cures it, regards, SIMON.

Cheers Simon,

I really don't thimk it's the seals, as it defo sounds more stressed metallic than rubber, but i'll give it a go. Problem is i may not be able to hear it with windows down on the move, as the wind noise may cover up the noises i'm trying to locate. Will try though.

As an aside, where in Lancashire are you, as i'm also located in Lancashire (West Lancs to be exact).

I think someone was trying to sort out a Cheshire meet in the not too distant future.

Hi w8pmc,
Only lower the windows a very small amount, i mean, almost a flick of the window switch, just enough to unseat the windows from their fully closed position. If it is the same problem i had, it will be apparent straight away that your fault sounds better.Try polishing the door shut areas, especially the bits where the felt strips touch the bodywork. If you open the rear doors you can see better where the felt strips are touching the body work.I hope this sorts it for you, as i know these things can spoil the whole experience of owning such a car.I am the worlds worst person to live with if my car has any sort of problems, especially squeaks and rattles.I am from Preston, Lancs.Funny how chaps can be so close, but are introduced on an American website, regards, SIMON.

Simon,

Cheers for that, i'll give it a go next week when i've another long trip in the Emmy.

I know Preston very well as my 2 eldest kids live with my ex-wife in Fulwood & i used to live in Penwortham for a few years a while back. I now live in a small village called Wrightington which is not that far from J27 M6, kinda between Wigan & Southport & not far from Heskin & Eccleston.

Have to meet up some time. I'm backwards & forwards to Camberley in Surrey almsot every week at the moment, having just started a new job & my H/Q being down their. I'm based from home so hopefully once i'm up to speed i'll not have the need to be down South quite so often.
