Question about HUD

Hello,
For all that have the HUD option, could I bother you to post up a picture of the actual unit in the dash? I am hoping to customise something into my E39 so I too could have HUD. I need to see what BMW did to hide the unit and also what they used to cover it up. Hopefully this will give me some ideas before I go tearing my dash apart. Thanks in advance.

p.s.-the unit I'm planning on using is a japanese unit that displays basic information and is nothing close to the intergrated one on the E60 M5... but it'll do for me =)

You might also wand to check realoem.com for the graphic. Gives you a good idea of the depth than just a pic from the car.

You can probably use a HUD just fine without a special front window. Basically, there is a special coating on or in the glass that eliminates double-imaging. Glass reflects light, but it can reflect it back to you inside the car on two surfaces: the inside of the glass, and the "inside of the outside" of the glass. Since the glass has thickness and is at an angle, these two surfaces will both reflect the HUD but in slightly different positions, giving you two images blended together and muddying up the display. Not too big a deal for the gear# or speed, but much more important when you have things like navigation directions in smaller print on there.

If its only showing basic stuff its probably not worth the hastle and expense. My M5 has the HUD option and I find it only boardline usefull.

Thanks for the tips fellas.

I went to the realoem site but the pictures do not come with dimensions listed. Hard to tell the size of it just by looking at the drawing. I will most likely have to have someone do a custom enclosure though. I've called around to see if anyone has experience with this kind of install but no luck. Anyone know of a good custom interior shop around southern cali?

Quite honestly I'm doing this only a bit for the functionality but more for aesthetics. I think it'll look awesome.. or at least I hope it will.

I think you could just watch an episode of MTV's Pimp My Ride for some references. Here is who they are currently working with: http://www.galpinautosports.com/
