Function of spare key fob?

Does anyone know what the spare key-fob in the glove compartment is for?
It clicks into a small holder just to the left of the CD changer. When removed & examined closely, it appears to be just a shell. I have no idea what it is and the owner's manual mentions nothing of it under the "glove compartment" section.

Thanks
Barry

Maybe better known as "the wallet key." It is a plastic key that comes with all your other keys.

Thanx for the answer on the key. I had that question as well. As to the OT whirring, I also noticed it this week and it was coming from the left rear trunk area. Thought it was my CD changer then realized that was relocated to the glove box from the e39.
