called a dealer today and asked if i can order 2007 m he says of course i have two allocations one is 2006 week 35 ,and one is 2007 week 37..........but he offered me the 2006 3k under msrp ...so my question is how can these cars be really and different with two weeks in between...and also what other options do the m07 have ?

The MY06 vs MY07 has more than 2 weeks between them as far as build dates. His allocation for week 35 is the last week in August...BMW plants are shut down in the month of August, so it's likely a build completion near the end of July. September 1st the MY07's start up and will likely roll off the line 2-3weeks after that, then get shipped to the states. So, there's about a month+ between vehicle builds.

I remember reading an article about automobile reliability and the conclusion was that there are higher defects during the first model year, but the second model year is as good as the third, fourth, etc...

So consider that you are spending close to $100K and get the 2007. It will have lots of the bugs fixed!

I would wait. 1 month isn't that horrible and the 3k isn't a whole
lot in the percentage of the car price. Consider it piece-of-mind
tax for a getting potentially more solid, "newer" machine.

Personally I hate to regret anything...this generally outweights
my impatients. If you end up getting the 2006 and something
happens then you'd probably be kicking yourself in retrospect.

Don't forget that we have the second model year here in the US. The first model year was the 2005 model year available only in Europe. Unless you need specific features related to the 2007, you might want to consider the 2006 at a $3K discount. However, if you plan to keep the car only for a year or two, you might lose the $3K in depreciation. But if you plan to keep long term, then the difference will be minimal.

The 2006 model year will include all the fixes that are offered on the 2007. I disagree that BMW will simply continue to build defective products into their 2006 model year cars just to differentiate them from the 2007 model year. For example, if the VANOS line has problems, and they fix the problem for 2007, I am pretty sure they will include the fix in the 2006 model year rather than merely saving the fix for 2007. What will differ, however, are the features offered and some small upgrades, for example, if they decide to use LEDs instead of incandescents for the rear brake lights.

I will, however, say that the depreciation component might be worth more than $3K so if you are not in a rush, you might want to wait the extra month.
