Experiences with Boomerang tracking device?

I need to install a tracking device for insurance purposes. Anybody have experience with Boomerang? Better options?

If it is only for insurance purposes, the built-in device from BMW should suffice, for your own peace of mind, go nuts.

Hey Danmar, I see you're in Toronto. Where did you buy your car from?
I was in the same predicament a month ago and wasn't sure if I wanted the Boomerang installed (...the usual concerns about getting a car back that has been driven inappropriately...). But I got the Boomerang b/c my insurance company made it a necessity - and I got a great rate to boot.

I remember reading that there was a flaw in the in car system, that it cannot be tracked if the car wasnt on or something like that. Anyone else know of something along those lines?

Why? Is someone steals my M5 the last thing I want is for them to find it and get it back to me...I would rather just get the insurance money and buy another...

That may be so but can't get insurance without it. The dealer (BMW Toronto) quoted me about$1,000CDN. The current in car system won't work if the car is indoors and I believe really isn't designed as an anti theft device.

What insurance company are you using that "requires" an aftermarket tracking device?

It's a large CDN based insurance company owned by the Bank I work for. For cars over $100k they need a tracking device. Premiums very reasonable otherwise.

I believe I would get insurance elsewhere even if it cost more rather than giving my employer the ability to track my movement if they so desire...too big brother like for me!

The employer thing is not an issue. They won't be tracking me-why would they? No big conspiracy- the M5 is not a company car. I understand that Boomerang calls me if the car moves without authorized ignition fob and then can track it if stolen.

If the car has a tracking device...it can be tracked period. So, if the employer decided it wanted to track you for some reason they could...maybe it is a USA-individual liberty thing, but I do not want anyone to have the ability to track me regardless of their otherwise seemingly good intentions...I would pay twice as much+ for insurance to prevent that possiblity...Parents are starting to install such devices in their childrens cell phones, under their skin, in teen-agers cars, ect...and, I see no problem with that as the parent has a responsibility to protect their children...but an employer, no way Jose!

ParkerF, his point is that he's getting insurance from a susidiary of the main banking company he works for (I think I know which one and I believe I get my insurance from there as well). His employer in no way has access to the Boomerang Tracking info and neither does his insurance company.
The privacy agreement signed with Boomerang states that only "boomerang" can track your car and only after a theft is reported does the police or insurance company get involved.
Big Brother is already watching.... no need to panic.

As far as being forced to get the 'rang ... I worked it out it's still cheaper when compared to other companies. I know.. I know, its the principle...
