      Clatter Noise When Starting?

Okay.....When the car has been sitting for a few hours and I go to start I get a clatter noise much like when the car has been sitting for a few day's. I know it normal when sitting for longer periods of time. Oil drains to the bottom of the oil pan. Know the clatter goes away in about 30 to 40 seconds? Concerned about it happing only after sitting for a few hours. Any Idea's??

      I'd say the VANOs also.
Whats the mileage so far on this oil change?(How long ago, how much longer?)

You ought to hear the V10. My E39 M5 was clattering at startup, and the E60 M5 sounds like a 10 cylinder diesel. I think BMW M cars just has a very distinctive, mechanical sound. I say it is normal. I like it.

I have that same clatter........but only on cold starts and even then it is not often.........before reading all the posts I'd attributed that clatter to just a simple cold start(oil not having been circulated around the motor yet)....after having run the car.then shutting down......and restarting it does not occur..at least not yet.

      Good Luck

I was looking to see if the mileage on the oil is more towards the end of its times. After long hard runs the oil just gets thinner, wanting to drain to the sump easier.

If it were the VANOS would it not throw a fault code? I had the same thing last Fall, and as disturbing as it sounded it did go away. Since I had no fault codes I've chalked it up to a lifter whose oil drained after sitting a while. In my case it was several weeks-- not a few hours.

That makes sense, in terms of me analysing why my car seemed a bit more diesel'ish' today...and it is at the end of an oil 'lifespan'. This, with many a quart thrown in. I haven't looked into doing my own oil change yet, I have the oil and filter). I have wondered if one can easily swap out a filter, on a cool engine morning -mid oil life- and do some house cleaning that way? It looks very inviting, sitting up top like that. I'd be suprised if it wasn't possible to swap a filter without changing the oil. Ok. Just checked, it is possible.

I gotta get on my bicycle, or I'll find myself using it all the time due to lack of an alternative.

Doug, not a failure, but no oil to the vanos pump system.
with low oil pressure it bounces back and forward till the pressure builds up.

My car makes the usual expected noises at startup and when warm (dieseling). I've just learned to ignore it. Does not affect performance in any way, and had been checked more times than I'd like to admit. No problems were ever found
