Question About Bluetooth, BMW Assist and SOS Call System

(For US Owners) The BMW Assist is free for the first year. Is the Assist and the SOS Call System one and the same? If I cancel my BMW Assist after the first year, will I still be able to use the SOS call function?

Also, do I need to subscribe/pay for BMW Assist in order to have the Bluetooth work with my mobile phone? Or can I still link up my mobile phone with the Bluetooth system on my M5 even after I decide to cancel my BMW Assist contract?

BMW assist & the SOS system use a dedicated cell phone. The SOS button is part of BMW assist, so once your subscription lapses (I let mine), I imagine it won't work.

The BT system is independent of the above.

Does that mean even if I don't have BMW Assist and SOS Call, my Bluetooth should still work with my personal mobile phone?

I would suggest you keep the assist feature- this will automatically call them if- GFB- your airbag goes off- if you dont respond they send out the police/ ambulance to your exact location. I think its the kind of service that might seem a little expensive when you are sitting at your desk paying bills, but if it saved your life it would seem like extremely cheap insurance. Thats my viewpoint- cheap insurance.

Good point. I will consider keeping it, especially since I have kids riding with me most of the time. Thanks.

I agree completely. You hope the $240 was a waste of money, you lose the insurance gamble, and you never use the emergency assist. The one time your car runs off the road at night and no one sees it, or you have some other issue that you can't speak, it will save you life. My life and my family's life is worth "losing" $240 a year. In addition, you get some of that back through the insurance discount for theft recovery location. "Lojack" is built in.
