Frustrations Caused By The Service Dept (1200 Mile Service)

Picked up my car from the dealer last night after they "completed" my 1,200 mile service. Instead of reading 1.0 on the oil gauge, it read 0.8L. The SOS Call System Malfunction was also lit up so the Bluetooth would not engage. It was such a frustrating drive home.

I figured out why we have so many problems with the car, at least here in the U.S. The simple reason is that the service guys simply don't know how to service this car. The M5 throws every typical BMW standard operating procedure out the window. But the problem is, the service guys think they know what they have been doing because they have been doing it for 15 years, and don't bother reading the service bulletins. Here in the Bay Area, half of the service guys probably don't even read English. I talked to the service guy after I noticed that my oil gauge still read 0.8L after the service. He said. That shouldn't be a problem because we replaced 7 quarts of oil. Then I noticed that the service document showed they used 8 quarts. Of course, then I go to the Owners Manual where it states as plain as day that the M5 oil capacity is 9.8 quarts with filter change. Duh!?!? Maybe a 530i runs on somewhere between 7-8 quarts, but they should read the bulletin which will tell them very clearly that they will be nearly 2 quarts short on the M5!

I was there when the tech did mine and the tech bulletin showed 8.8L with oil service.

He used 9L since when he completed the oil change, it showed 0.5L on the oil level and he stated that 0.6L is optimal.

I am not sure if the tech bulletin indicated 8.8 litres or 8.8 quarts as they will be slightly different. I am also not sure if the tech bulletin indicated oil capacity with filter change or oil capacity without filter change. All I do know if that the Owner's Manual states very clearly that the oil capacity is 9.8 quarts with filter change.

I would guess that the oil gauge should show 1.0 rather than 0.8 or 0.5 or 0.6. At least in the Manual, it states that the oil gauge should show 1.0.

what about the blue tooth etc? is that resolved now? I suggest you make them fix the oil situation and address the others- if you remain calm and reasonable I think you will get a good response- sorry to read of this.

SCORPIO is right. Based on the oil service bulletin in one of the Sticky threads, the ideal reading should be 0.6L. 1.0L is MAXIMUM. Which means that my reading of 0.8L is fine. I stand corrected. The oil service bulletin also indicates that while the capacity is 9.3 litres, some of the oil remains in the engine so the typical oil with filter change should require closer to 8.8 litres. Again I stand corrected.

Separately, the SOS Call System Malfunction miraculously resolved itself when I started the car this morning. Once the problem disappeared, my Bluetooth started to work again.

Thanks for everyone's input. I do feel a little silly now.
