Dinan E60 Engine Swap

I have been calling Dinan and they won't release any info on the forthcoming E60 M5 upgrades, but I just spoke with a good source close to Dinan who told me what is coming. Drum roll please..... Engine swap. They take your engine core and swap it for a bored & stroked version of the same engine. 610hp. These are all of the details I could get for now. I imagine there will be transmission upgrades to go with this to handle the added stress the motor is generating. It won't be cheap either.

Does that mean we would go through another break-in? Woulldn't we get more low end tourque with the new engine?

Wow, that sounds like some serious engine tuning. Looks like I have to go back to Morgan Hill this summer, as we did in 2002

Gustav, maybe you can do something to verify this info. and find out more, since you know them well. I was told this by a friend of Steve's who has an E39 S2.

I would think there would be more low-end torque, since that is what this car desperately needs. I am just wondering what they need to do to beef-up the tranny to handle the torque. This is going to be one of those upgrades for the few who are willing to spend the big $$$. I think probably $25k as a guess.

Instead of an upgrade on the S85, which is absolutely amazing itself... we get an entirely new engine?

So they essentially swap the block? I'm assuming that Dinan re-bolts all the "stuff" from the first engine onto the new block. Interesting approach.

I know $25,000 is a guess, but still - to add a substantial amount of torque and another 100 hp to the the M5 and M6 is not a bad deal and this car could use some more engine twist off the line.

Just think of the kills one could make for a "reasonable" total price. (reasonable as being compared to the competition)

They could get to 5.8L by

1mm overbore (0.040") to 93mm
9.8mm stroke to 85mm (S62 was 89mm)

600 hp should not be an issue to achieve at that displacment with some induction and exhaust work.

Can't find any mention of it on Hamann's actual site, but what looks like a Hamann press release says...

Quote:
The high-revving 5 litre V10 with 507 bhp and 520 Nm is not allowed to show off the full effects of its power in the series version. But just how fast might the M5 be able to race? HAMANN supplies the answer: 327 km/h, which is achieved solely by means of Vmax override. For those who are not satisfied with this and who desire even more power, HAMANN offers now a solution. The Laupheim-based tuner provides the M5 with a sports-kit composed of high-performance headers, sports metal catalysts, a engine map optimisation and a Vmax-override. The 10-cylinder engine then produces lordly 603 hp and 574 Nm.
From headers + exhaust and software? Almost seems like it could be true.

I would find it very hard to believe this is true. First, the exhaust is going to add nothing, or virtually nothing. The stock exhaust is already very free-flowing. Headers will add some hp, but no torque at the low end, which is where we need it. Software optimization will help, but maybe by 25-40hp at best. If anyone can make the motor produce 600+hp, Dinan definitely can, and it will be the real deal. But I think they will definitely need to increase the displacement. I'm sure they will have various stages of upgrade, and I would not be surprised if they eventually get 650 or 700 hp from the V-10 with some sort of forced air induction. Just speculation at this point. But I would not buy into 600 hp from headers, exhaust and software.

600 hp out of 5.0L is definetely possible, but probably not in a streetable trim. Some BMW race motors are producing 140hp/L. Assuming smog and "streetability" was not an issue here's how you'd do it.

. Raise Compression to 13:1 with lighter pistons
2. Ditch Cats, get better headers
3. New engine mgmt system, probably MOTEC.
4. Lighten Crankshaft
5. New Connecting Rods
6. Bigger Valves
7. Longer Duration cams

In a "stage 1" mod, with induction and exhaust and maybe some toher stuff. I think you could see 110-115 hp/L or around 560hp. This would be similar to what Dinan did with the S62.

If you did, a "full race", I think you could see 650-700hp, but that would be a 25 hr race motor that would peak around 8500 rpm on power.

If you did the stroker to 5.8L I think you could see 600 hp and be streetable/smoggable. The Porsceh V10 is 5.8L and 600 hp.
