Eight quarts of 5w-30 Castrol synthetic oil (or similar) belongs in your car. Oil filters are about 8 to 10 bucks.

Good luck
Joe

I've only had my M5 for less than a month, but I've always heard that you should use the 10W-60 Castrol. A lot more expensive than the regular Sythetic blend but recommended.

What are everyone's thoughts?

Before 3/00 you have to use 10w60 after 3/00 you can use 5w-30. I have a 5/00 and use the 10w-60 for better protection.

Thanks Joe,

My build date is 11/99 so I guess I should stick to the 10W-60. Do you know what was changed in the later models that allows the different viscosity and oil type, I'm just curious.

Hi:

A few things:

10W-60 Castrol TWS for before 03/00 Production is the only "specified" oil for the S62 powerplant.

The capacity is 7.1 litres. Do not overfill.

There are a few Oil Change DIY's in either the "Best of" or Tips section.

I do not recommend the front blocks for getting the car in the air. I use 4 blocks to get the car 3" higher and level. Since the oil drain hole is in the center of the pan, any slant will not allow the back of the oil pan to empty.

jjc,

What do you mean by using 4 blocks? Do you jack the car up and have 4 jackstands on each of the rubber mounts? I understand about having two wheels up causing the oil to flow beyond the drain plug.

I did it without any jacks/ramps. Just position the car over the sidewalk ... rear to the house and front wheels on the driveway "ramp." Car ended up level, and the drop away of the driveway apron was enough to do it easily. Worth a try.

My homeowners association won't even let me wash a car outside; I can't imagine what they'd do if I tried to pull that!

BMW puts a sticker in the front of the car which is visible when you open the hood. If build after 3/00 in the U.S., you will most likely see 5w-30; earlier is 10w-60. FWIW, in Germany the recommendation is TWS 10w-60 only.

Jerry

Finally, the guilt got to me, knowing that my wife was the one that really needed a car, for hauling kids around, groceries and long trips. I decided to trade it in this morning and soon will be on someones dealer block again.

The Honda dealer gave me $35k for it, I didnt loose money! for $35k was the wholesale price.

If someone ever gets it again, I have my mechanic who can do the clutch work for around $900 and that will be a very special car! for the money!

An 2002 M5 with about 50k miles, WOW! Im already worked a deal for my wife new van this morning and will be handing in the M5 keys today. I like to drive it more, for its fun driving that thing! I enjoyed it!

I finally realized that family needs are more important!

Thanks for the concern gang! I had fun! didnt loose money, well maybe $500, but it was a memorable brithday wkend moment using that M5, with friends and family, Dont worry we didnt trasht it !

Its a Great CAR! just get the clutch/oil seal/wheel fixed! (dont do it with the dealer, it more expenzive, I have trusted foreign car mechanic fren for you for maybe around $1500+/-, if you like to PM me!

Do you actually still own the car?

or did you trade it in as you stated in another post (and in a PM to me)?

If you still own it, why the BS...and if you don't own it, why the BS?
