Very weird M5

Was driving 2nite in pretty jammed hwy, then accelerated to 6k on 1st then 2nd and then my beast started to misfire, lose power and Service engine soon light came out. Car was running like a **** for a next 20 min. then parked it, turned off the engine and after a minute start it again. No SES light no misfire. All cylinders were alive.
Maybe ignition coils got hot coz was driving for 4 hrs???
Just bought my M, does she have COP or one coil for 2 cyl
?? Do they brake often?

you'll need to read the codes to see what is going on. there is really no way to guess and fix it. Could be a bad coil, plug, cps, mafs etc. If you do a search on "limp home mode" you'll find a ton of material, not that it will help you, as a hundred faults will cause this to happen. Get a code reader, peake makes a good one.

2morra going back to school so will have a chance to plug in generic obdII, I wish we had a bmw scan tool but it's too expensive and not enough people with bmw's in my college to make my school to buy it. Thanks for reply.

The E39 M5 has COP (coil-on-plug, one ignition coil per spark-plug located at the top of each spark-plug)

To easily check if it is a MAF problem, do a MAF test:
