Long story short... Walked up to the car... the crown of the road was enough to have it tilted... Shiny fluid by left front tire. Finger dip. Nice oil (clean, fresh, clearly a lifeblood). I did just add a quart. Oil use was stable, accelerated, added the quart, it seemed stable, found the puddle.

That's all I know.

Re: Oil Puddle

Sounds like another oil line failure - like mine.

If it is - I SERIOUSLY think that BMW should recall all M5's and replace this line.

Yup, otherwise they're gonna start replacing engines.

Re: Oil Puddle

jamie22 - spot on, but whose to say a slight lack of oil won't cause an issue within the warranty period, but does later on!?!?!?

idooct - pic. of my line here, the bubble of oil on running the engine for around 1 minute appeared right around where the arrow is in the pic.:

Re: Oil Puddle

I wonder if the design of the line is inadequate to its task or if they got a defective batch. Either way, it sounds like they need a recall because it would really suck to get stuck in he middle of nowhere with your oil spraying out.

Hi Tom,

These braided lines are usually VERY strong, and designed for very high pressure. Quite a strange fault!

But you know what they say about $10 parts and racecars failing to get to the finish line, this is a very similar situation!

I would be pretty upset if engines start failing because of this, as it is not a nice thing to go through as it is - just such a hassle! I would hate to think how long it would take to have an engine replaced, these cars take long enough on order as it is!

But as I have said above, what if the engine has been slightly starved of oil at some stage because of these line failures. You won't know unless the engine was pulled apart. If it is a slight failure of oil supply this may not become apparent until a couple of years down the track.

I'm going to phone BMW UK again on Monday and see what they have to say about it.

There are far too many failures that appear to be oil related - for such a well refined??? car?

Re: Oil Puddle

I'm pretty sure it is a batch issue. Glenn seems to have been the first of half a dozen which have failed in the last two weeks. If the fault was endemic we'd have heard about it long ago. As of Thursday there was nothing on the BMW UK intranet regarding failures. Just keep the OBD set on oil - if consumption shoots up get your torch (flashlight) out!

If you are worried about your engine there are companies that will run diagnostic tests on a sample of your oil - I'll find out more.

Tim

Re: Oil Puddle

Cheers Tim!

Hopefully mine will be sorted Mon/Tue this week.

I guess it is the 'unknown' that is so annoying!

O - and mine came from Germany of course, but right-hand drive of course. So the other cars around my batch could well have been either I'm assuming.

Angry Re: Oil Puddle

I've just joined the "Oil Puddle Club". Mine is literally pouring out from the bottom of my car. I've got a whopping 1006 miles on it! Monday, the flatbed will arrive and take it away. I hope they have some of those lines around...they didn't have the oil filter for a few days!

I'm ok with this stuff happening once in a while...but the most frustrating part is that idrive says the oil is fine...even with the "quick measure" method. There is certainly at least a quart on the floor right now...but the computer says it's still full!

Can't really tell but it looks like that's the line which connects the oilpump with the oilcooler upfront.

Judging from the condition the line is in, it's not overpressure. I think it's rather the weird shape the line is in combined with vibration from the engine. If it were faulty design then the other line in the picture would've/should've snapped aswell.

i think that if BMW would design the line with more slack, then it should be fine.

Amazing that this didn't come up when they were testing it. We already have so many failures in such a short time. I'm glad I chose to wait till the 2007 models come out, not that I feel for you guyz but atleast this won't happen to me (I hope).
