What are the exact proper break in procedures strongly recommended by BMW?

Re: Break in Poll

Great thread!

I actually think there are a lot of different opinions on this - and everyone has a different one it seems!

If you read through the manual, there are a number of things it doesn't clearly specify!

I personally took it over 5.5K rpm after 1000 miles, but then after my first service of course I took it to 8,250rpm a number of times. NOW! it doesn't say you can't, but what it does say is to GRADUALLY increase revs and road speed up until the 3000mile (or so) mark. It DOES NOT say anything about not using Launch Control, apart from for the first 300 miles where you can't do a few things.

Manual extract here:

Re: Break in Poll

over 5500 a couple of times, more by mistake than intentional. Never under full throttle. once on a downshift. might have seen 6500. I've had the car a weekk and put 750 on it. Expect to hit 1100 or so by Tues when it goes in for service. Can't wait!

I have broken in 15 new vehicles, always adhering strictly to the rules. I have always have excellent luck with these cars, so if it works, don't fix it!

Re: Break in Poll

I fall down the middle I suppose - the one thing I always do with cars is allow them to warm through thoroughly before ragging them. The first 500 miles I'm very careful, and after that I might exceed the stated max by a few hundred RPM but still steer clear of full throttle. Once the first run in milestone is reached I increase maximum sustained revs by 500 every 200 miles or so, and try to keep max revs below the same limit which is really difficult once you start using full throttle.

I only keep my cars for a year so I shouldn't really worry about it, but mechanical empathy just won't let me do it! Contrast that with my brother who's been driving high performance cars for 20 years, keeps them for around 3 years, doesn't even open the manual, let alone read it, never bothers to run them in, revs the nuts off them from cold, and wonders why he has had two engines blow up on him!
