I like the article. It was fun to read. I guess we got the car at a real bargain at MSRP according to them.

Re: New M5 review for the USA

NO LAUNCH MODE FOR US!!!!

The edmunds article says the only difference between the euro and Us spec'd cars is the elimination of the launch mode for us customers.

That is horse----!

Re: New M5 review for the USA

Can any of the new deliveries in the US do a trial test- assuming some have already done the break in... ?

Re: New M5 review for the USA

A good question would be.. Should I cancel my order in retaliation? Or wait for the manual?

Re: New M5 review for the USA

Is the HUD tach really this far off:

Unfortunately, the tach in the head-up display disappoints. It lags behind the real deal by as much as 1,500 rpm, so it isn't very useful. Rely on it while driving hard, and you'll be constantly bouncing off the rev limiter.

Re: New M5 review for the USA

The LC for most intents and purposeses is disabled in the US car. It will rev to about 1600-1700 RPM and is unaffected by the cruise-control stalk rev modulation method described elsewhere. This is enough to get you a burnout launch as it dumps the clutch fairly quickly, but not nearly enough engine momentum with clutch slip to get it past its low-speed power-curve valley for an optimal launch.

This is likely due to some combination of:

1. American driving culture and its interest in drag racing.
2. The complete warranty and maintenance coverage all American cars get.
3. A warped and expensive tort and product liability legal system.

While I did not sign the "Stop Chris Bangle" petition, I would sign one strongly asking for LC to be rectified per EU version specs - I'm sure its a simple software flash. I would not object to BMW requiring a signed acknowledgment and indemnification agreement by the owner receiving the software update agreeing to:

1. We understand the dangers of LC, and hold BMW harmless.

2. It clarifyies the limited warranty and maintenance coverage on the clutch to not include use/abuse of LC.

3. Owner Requirement to revert to standard software in the event of resale unless new owner signs same the agreement.

Tom

Re: New M5 review for the USA

I do not know what to say. A few topics cross my mind and I will briefly discuss. Why would you market a vehicle with certain caracteristics and then not comply with what you say? We are talking about a high end car that thrives on technology such as SMG. One of the so called beauties of SMG was that you were able to do a "perfect" launch with it. If you are not sure the product will hold, do not even advetise it!

And to think how ridiculous our past conversations look, when we were commenting about a 4K launch versus 4.5K.

It now seems that the SMG cars have lost ground in the launching capabilities and the manual cars might lose some of top end acceleration. But which will we use more?
