          M5 for 996TT

Just got the call my by BMW dealer--I can get a September build date with October delivery. I was not even on the list since I took my name off once I saw the appearance of the new 5er and fooled around with I-drive. I currently have an 02 TT and am considering getting the M5 just to drive termporily until the 997 TTs come out. Do you guys think there will be a heavy demand for used M5 by late next year?

I'm in exactly the same position! I just chopped my 911 Turbo for an M5 and am expecting my new Turbo around Q3 next year. I don't really know a great deal about the US market so it's hard for me to say, but I expect UK M5s to be holding list, at least at dealers, for the next 9 - 12 months...

I would suggest, just for the experience of owning one, that you get the M5.
Even if you don't like it you should be able to sell it on and lose nothing. It is an incredible car and beats the 911 Turbo in most areas. Fuel consumption is terrible, but that's just something you have to accept when you have the performance of a supercar in something this size.

Not that it's a major consideration, but what's the gas mileage with the new M5?

Around London I tend to average around 10, but can get up to 20 on a longer journey sitting at around 75-80. That drops to about 13/14 at 120-130.

Not great, but what a way to waste money...

no exact epa ratings as of yet but given the size of the gas guzzler tax if i recall correctly it works out to 2 or 3 mpg worse than the e55 (avg city/highway rating)...it may be a great car but on this aspect it's very disappointing. but most won't care for obvious reasons. ok i'm going to hug a tree now...

I really have no problem with the gas mileage, but as others have said, it's the small tank hence poor range that is disappointing.

          Steve,

I don't know that a September built date will get you an October delivery unless it's very early September, but we are at August 25 already. Is that MSRP?

My friend is expecting his 997tt delivery summer 06, so you are talking about 8 month of E60 M5 then the 997tt (assuming you can also get an early delivery with your 997tt). There is no crystal ball, but I trust that you won't loose money selling your M5 next summer. If it's a lease, then that's another matter.

It's a good problem to have. Good luck.

          CP
