Re: Does M5 have pushbutton starter?

Starting with September production, all E60s will have a start/stop button, and key fob similar to E90, and comfort access as an option.

as long as the car is built in Sept 2005 and beyond, the car will have pushbutton starter, regardless of comfort access option.

Re: Does M5 have pushbutton starter?

Finally a push buttom starter, I was wondering when BMW would catch up with Lexus and MBZ. I thought BMW would be the first to impliment the push button since they had it on Z8. Don't want to be left out when a 325 has push button stater either.

I didn't want to get this car with the same fob as as my M3 and X5. Well, time to head off to my dealership and order my 2008 M5.

What's so great about a pushbutton starter?

If you still have to put a key in before you press the button, where's the progress???

Unless, of course, you have "comfort access," which still makes you have the key with you, but it will save you the arduous duty of taking it out of your pocket. And, all of this for the mere pittance of $1000.

I feel like a complete sucker, but I'm getting it despite the apparent absurdity of the offering and its price.

Re: Does M5 have pushbutton starter?

In a 745Li the key with push button starter has a chip which keeps all diagnostic data on car such as miles run and what service is required etc.

The Key also remembers all of users setting such as seat position - the second key woyld remember the spouse's settings for example.
When you go to the dealership for service the technician can get all this data by putting the key in a cradle connected to a computer.

Re: Does M5 have pushbutton starter?

The key does not need to store anything. It just needs to be unique and thus index into car's preferences storage for that key, just as has been done for the last few generations of BMW cars without the fancy key and button.

If important diagnostic information is stored in the key, it is misplaced, because the key can obviously be misplaced.

Tom

My understanding is that if you have the key on your person (i.e. in your pocket) that is close enough to use the push button starting. You do not have to stick the key into anything, but you must have the key in close proximity. I believe that it also unlocks the doors with a pull of the handle as long as you have your key with you. As stated here, you have to order "comfort access" to have this feature.

Exactly my point.

Pay another $1000 (as I am, too), and you still only have 1 action to perform. Fail to pay the extra and you'll have 2 actions to perform, instead of one.

Sounds like racketeering to me!

The only real benefit of the button that I can see is that it reduces the risk of leg/knee injury in a collision.

They seem to be adding all sorts of gizmos to the E60 at the moment, with a rolling introduction schedule that makes it almost impossible to spec a car in advance! Right at the last minute, I managed to add Comfort Access and Front-Seat ISOFIX (w/ airbag lockout) to my car.

Mind you, they never did figure out how to provide a rear-seat DVD system in the E61 - most annoying...
